With a startled yelp, you stumble backwards as you fall over something in the path. The light has gotten so dim in this eerily-silent wood that you didn't notice anything there a second ago.
The wind gets knocked out of you for a moment and your eyes have to adjust to the swarm of stars that seem to burst in front of them from the pain of having fallen on your tailbone. Rubbing your lower back, you peer through the gloom. There's something there, under your ankles. It's fairly large, almost as big as you are ... perhaps a bit bigger; it's hard to tell in this light.
Still, as your eyes adjust a horrible feeling dawns on you. It's not a "what" lying there beneath your legs ... it's a "who".
Or is it?
You can make out the shape of a head for sure, as well as two arms and two legs, but what's the rest? Is that a ... a tail? Like a small tuft of fur at the base of his ...its... spine?
The creaking of the branches overhead slowly starts to die down as you contemplate the situation. The body isn't moving; should you check it out?
