"I'm glad you asked me that question," I said. "I want you all to know that whatever were the law firm's plans, they are not mine. I will definitely say I was impulsive in wishing to inherit this estate, and indeed I have no idea what to do with it all. But I do think it would be enjoyable to live here, so I plan to at least do that. As such, I would definitely appreciate the help and support of you all. I certainly will not dismiss any of you, but...given the rather unique circumstances, I can't make you stay."
After a few moments of silence, the maid named Alice spoke up, "But you could wish us to stay, couldn't you?"
"Well..." I said and my voice trailed off. I could see most of them with rather nervous looks on their faces. "Well, yes, I suppose I could, but I do not want to make you do anything." This was true, but as I said it, I realized that it was also in contradiction to what I planned to do next.
"Considering that this is both our place of employment and our home, I can tell you that none of us want to leave," Jennings explained. "We already discussed this between ourselves. Though I am sure we would re-consider if we do not feel we are treated properly."
I nodded. "I respect that," I said.
"But, sir," Jennings said, "How can you be certain that the law firm will not find some sort of discrepancy and deny you the estate?"
"I think I've taken care of that," I said. I went on to explain, "You see, I didn't anticipate such complications of being interrogated by some lawyer. I figured everything would just be in order. After that session with Miss Flanagan, I made another wish that there would be no further complications. Hopefully we'll know for sure tomorrow, if not sooner."
"I hate that Miss Flanagan," said Alice. "No sense of humor."
I laughed. "You're definitely right about that," I said. "But please, we've been talking for so long and I really don't know anything about any of you. Jennings, could we possibly go to a larger room?"
He raised an eyebrow at me, but said, "Certainly, sir, if you'll follow me."
