Transform or Dare?

Inquisitor and Dragon

added 13 years ago O

"Yes?" Draco asked nervous, "Does your Abbess need my help for something?"

"I am not with the local convent," Marie spoke, "I come to you with a more serious mission. May I come in?"

Draco stepped aside and let her in. Marie came in and let Draco return to his bed and sit down. He looked both suspicious and curious.

"What is this mission, you speak of?"

"Before I tell you of that, you must swear that you will tell no one else of this mission or even this conversation," Marie spoke.

"Is this really that important?"

"You MUST swear," Marie repeated.

"Very well, I swear," Draco admitted, "now, what is this mission?"

"One of great importance to stop those that have turned their backs on God," Marie spoke.

"Heretics? Isn't that the job of the Inquisition?"

"It is," Marie answered, "but the Council doesn't believe the threat that is coming exists."

"How do you..."

"I am the Inquisitor who does not officially exist."

Draco gasped in total disbelief, "Impossible."

"I assure you that it is," Marie answered, "but my story is too complicated to go into now. The threat is coming, and I MUST stop it before gains the power to destroy the world."

"And what is to stop me from turning you into the proper authorities?" Draco inquired.

"Your word that you won't repeat this conversation to ANYONE," Marie answered.

Draco only sighed, "Very well... humor me, what is this threat?"

"Three witches in the New World," Marie answered, "powerful, evil, insane, who if left unchecked will eventually be strong enough to attack and destroy Rome from where they are now without batting an eye."

Some of that was an exaggeration, but Marie hopped it would get the response she wanted.

"And why do you come to me?"

"You are a dragon, are not?" Marie asked, knowing she had make sure she didn't let on that she already knew.

"Yes."

"Records that I've seen have indicated that your race is naturally resistant to the powers of witchcraft and sorcery," Marie spoke, "that you can tap into those powers without harm."

"You're asking me to help you?"

"I'm asking to provide me and those that will go with me with a protection spell so that the witches can't turn us into some object, animal, or slave to them," Marie answered.

"Our connection doesn't quite work that way," Draco answered, "it protects my kind, yes, but it does not truly enable us to cast spells... if it did, I fear that my kind and civilization would still be at war."

Marie only sighed, "I have to stop them..."

"How do you even know of these witches?" Draco asked, "if they're in the New World, gossip and news wouldn't really be known here... at least not for a month or two at the earliest."

"Second sight," Marie sighed, "God has shown me things before they happen in the hopes of creating a fairer world."

"I doubt you've succeeded at that," Draco answered, "there are always things at are unfair to us all..."

"Things take time, and people don't always see the truth quickly or easily," Marie answered, "and the witches refuse to accept that, and that is what will make them dangerous."

"And you thought I could protect you from them?"

Marie nodded, "though that seems like a doomed mission now."

Draco then looked on as the woman sighed heavily. Part of it reminded him of his own failures.

"Let me come with you," Draco offered.

"What?"

"I may not be able to cast a spell to protect you, but I'm sure I can help you think of some other way... and if not, I'm sure I can provide you with the distraction needed to kill them," Draco spoke, "if their treat is that great."

"Not kill them," Marie answered, "defeat and capture them."

"For what purpose, if they're that dangerous, trying them might be difficult," Draco warned.

"Not if they're drugged," Marie answered, "their magic will prevent them from truly being disoriented by it, but the drug would affect them in a different way. They can't avoid that."

"Then perhaps that might help you in the "fight"," Draco offered, "find some way to drug them before the battle and reduce their ability to coherently use their magic. It might help, and that is where I can help."

"In what way?" Marie asked, "they might focus all their energy on you."

"Not if I can make them think I'm already on their side," Draco offered, "and once close enough, I can hit them with darts with whatever drug coating the tips. Once drugged, then the rest of the "team" can move in."

"They might still attack you in some other way," Marie spoke, "what is coming will be a fight. I can not risk someone who is not prepared for it."

"It doesn't appear like you have a choice," Draco answered, "I am the only one who can give you a remote chance of success."

"But you have not been trained to fight."

Draco lowered the bandages around his muzzle, revealing the green scales and let smoke escape his mouth as he spoke.

"If it really comes down to it, they can be torched without a fight even starting," Draco answered, "besides, if the Inquisition doesn't accept the mission, you'll need some other reason to go to the New World. Even if you don't officially exist, that does not mean that they would just let you disappear. I have tried to win work as a missionary... and have sadly failed. Perhaps, though, I can win a mission that will give you cover to go to the New World."

Marie didn't immediately answer. After a few moments she sighed again.

"Very well," Marie sighed, "but remember that no one is to know of this mission. When you apply for this missionary mission, I am not to be mentioned by name or gender."

Draco only nodded, while Marie wondered what she was getting herself into with Katherine volunteering to help and now with a friend of "Maurice" volunteering.

"May I ask why you are offering to help though?"

"Because I have failed so much as a missionary," Draco answered, "to pay for the sins my kind has committed. Maybe, if I help you, I can not only help you and the church but help my kind as well. Show the world that we can change. That were aren't the nomadic warriors that we once were."
