Slowly coming back to consciousness, Jeff was just thinking of the frightening dream he had, turning into a big, dirty smelly donkey, and how frustrating it was not to have hands or human speech any longer.
Still mostly asleep, he thought he was back home in his bed, beginning to wake up with such a monstrous dream in his head. He was half-tempted to tell his brother about it, but thought it was pretty embarrassing, dreaming about turning into a donkey. He still felt a little shame about it, but could breath easier, knowing it was all but a dream. With his mind at ease, he just continued laying there, mostly half asleep not realizing he was laying on his side, in a strange barn.
He lay there for perhaps another 10 minutes before he yawned and began to stretch. But something wasn't quite right. Two things happened simultaneously: His morning breath tasted nastier and stronger than normal, and he tried stretching his "arms" up like he normally does every morning upon waking.
He thought, "I guess I must have forgotten to brush my teeth last night before going to bed. And my arms are feeling pretty stiff."
Continuing with attempting to stretch his arms, his hands also felt rather strange, as he couldn't stretch his fingers.
At the same time, he also had a raging boner! Something which was quite rare for the under-developed 14 year old
Without thinking (he was still about half asleep, and quite groggy,) he tried reaching down to gab himself real quick. He couldn't move his arm in the other direction, and still couldn't seem to open his fingers to grasp anything.
Becoming more awake and more aware, he finally opened his eyes. He got the surprise of a lifetime he had never experienced upon waking in his life: He could see in two different opposing direction, his eyesight was fairly poor, and he couldn't see any colors! His left eyeball was mostly looking at the ground, and his right eye, mostly looking up at a wooden ceiling. Also, he could look down his own snout, and see his face was extended freakishly far out from where it was supposed to be. He wanted to wipe his eyes, but was prevented from doing so (not quite understanding that his arms were still the legs of a donkey, and his hands; hooves. And that his "dream" was quite real).
Attempting to say the words "What the hell?" He was greeted with the horrible hoarse braying of a jackass: "Hee-haww!"
