"Ow! Ree, what in the..."
Linda should have known better, but her immediate reaction was to try to pull her hand
away. Since it was attached to the bat at present this was not necessarily the best course
of action to take. In a moment, she recovered, and relaxed her palm. It hadn't started to
smart just yet, but she forced herself to steel, and coax the little creature away from her
thumb. It hadn't actually bitten down all the hard, it was just soothing itself, probably
because it was away from its mother.
Linda had read that bats usually weaned for about 2-3 weeks before moving to flight,
but she has no idea how old this one was. She thought it has been old enough. Maybe
she should have provided it with more milk...
"Well, I think I should put you back in your box for now, until I can figure out something
better." She looked down at the little face in silent appeal, as she laid the little guy down
into its shoebox. "and I doubt you are ready to attempt another flight tonight my little
friend. Behave, and tomorrow, since it looks as though I'm stuck with you for a little
while longer, we'll try and make your stay a little more comfortable.
Linda scratched her side nervously and then realized she felt more proprietary toward
Ree, a motherly sort of concern before she released him into the wild once again.
"How Silly," she said aloud, but that's what she thought.
