Dylan decided to go home, figuring that once she got there, she could find some of her clothes to use to change back into her original male self. Then, he could always try his plan again. Just as she was stepping up to the front door of her home about to open it, she noticed her mom driving up. Dylan's mom got out of her car and asked, "Can I help you, young lady?"
"Shit," Dylan thought to herself. "What am I gonna do now? I can't tell my mom what's going on!" So, Dylan quickly came up with what she felt was a plausible lie. "Oh, uh, I'm a friend of Karen's. Is she home?"
"She should be. I'll go get her for you. What's your name dear?"
"Oh, A-April," Dylan replied, repeating the lie she had told Coach Springs.
"Okay, April, you just wait here," Dylan's mom said as she went inside. Dylan felt weird having to wait outside the door of her own home, but she couldn't just walk in, not with her mom thinking she was some unknown girl. After a few moments that seemed to last forever, Karen came to the door, staring somewhat quizzically at Dylan.
"Are you April?" Karen asked. "Do I know you?"
"Sssh, it's me, Dylan."
"Dylan! Oh my god, I can't believe it! That's hilarious! Why'd you turn yourself into a girl?"
"Look, it's a long story. I just need to come in so I can use my clothes to change back to normal."
"Okay, 'April'," Karen said as she let Dylan in. As the two girls walked towards their rooms, their mom called out, "Karen, will your friend be staying for dinner?"
"Oh, can she?" Karen asked with a cruel smile aimed at Dylan.
"Certainly, the more the merrier," her mom replied.
"Great!" Karen said as Dylan sighed. "Oh, that reminds me, Dylan called and said that he'd be eating dinner at his friend Sean's house."
"Fine, fine, though I wish that boy would ask me first."
"Yeah, you know how boys are," Karen said, laughing as she led Dylan back to her room.
Once they were both in Karen's room, Dylan asked, "Why'd you bring me here?"
"Well, you can't exactly go rummaging through Dylan's room, April," Karen told her. "Not while mom's here. And besides, since you're staying for dinner, you won't need your clothes just yet."
"Oh, great. Well, I guess I can stay a girl for a little while longer."
And so, the two girls Karen and Dylan/April hung out in Karen's room until it was time for dinner. Dylan found it kind of weird having to hang out with his sister in her room, while she kept asking him why he changed into a girl. Eventually, he relented and explained how it was all a mistake, but he didn't tell her about meeting the Coach. She just kept laughing and talking about how much fun it was to have a sister now. "Do you still have that medallion thing?" she asked Dylan.
"You mean this coin? Yeah, of course, I've still got it," Dylan said, showing it to her. "I can't wait to use it to change back. Being a girl is so weird."
And then their mother called them in for dinner. As they were clearing away the dishes, Karen asked, "Can April spend the night?"
"Well, if it's okay with her parents, it's fine with me," their mom said. Dylan gave Karen a strange look, but Karen just mouthed the words "trust me". Later, as the two girls went back to Karen's room, Karen explained, "Well, I just realized that I told mom that Dylan was spending the night at a friend's house. So, it wouldn't make sense if you changed back to yourself right now. You wouldn't belong here as yourself, so you'll just have to spend the night in that girl form."
"Well, I guess that makes sense," Dylan sighed.
