It was nearly the end of the day and Kyle thought he had made it home free. There was no call over the intercom system for a talent show and if he didn't go then he didn't have to worry. Kyle went into his his last class, a study hall, confident that he had beat Jennifer.
He sat in the same group with his friends as usual; Tom the dorky but still somewhat attractive guy that looked after Kyle, Natalie his girlfriend who, while not very attractive was better than any of them could hope, and Ken the overweight dreamer without any drive or confidence. They had only a minute to talk before the speaker in the classroom cracked and Kyle's heart sank.
"Attention all students and faculty, there will be a talent show taking place in the main auditorium in five minutes. All are required to attend, thank you." And the voice cut out just as soon as it came on. As all the classrooms filed out into the hall and to the auditorium, most were happy to get out of class but Kyle was sweating and stepping on eggshells the whole way.
The first half of the show went as expected with group after group of singers, dancers and comedians from the school doing their bit. Kyle sat with his friends but unlike them wasn't watching the stage. He was snapped out of his haze by a call from the principle at the podium,
"And now Kyle will entertain us all with, well, it says her a 'special performance'." There were random claps in the audience as Kyle's heart nearly exploded from his chest. Against his will, his body stood up and edged down the row to the end and up towards the stage. He caught sight of Jennifer along the way who was pulling out her cellphone to record the moment.
