I had just confessed my love for Janet and she had seen my ears so I decided to tell her the truth. Taking a deep breath I said, "This may be a little hard to believe but I can change my body any way I want."
"So you gave yourself dog ears?" Janet asked.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"To see if you were really alive. I saw your chest move."
"Oh I see," Janet said nodding. "Do you truly love me?"
"I do," I said with all sincerity.
Janet looked down and said, "I wish that you didn't."
"Why," I asked not understanding what she was saying.
Janet took a deep breath and said, "We're going to be buried Tuesday."
"But you're alive," I said shocked. "They can't bury you."
"You'll find that we can bury them," a female voice said behind me making me jump.
"Who are you?" I asked turning around and seeing two women standing there with Mike behind them. I hadn't heard them come in or come up behind me. I guess I was paying too much attention to Janet to notice.
"I'm agent Wolf and this is agent Bunny," the woman who had spoken before said. "We're from the Center for the Control and Prevention of Magic or C.C.P.M. if you prefer."
"What do you want?" I asked.
"They're making us disappear to protect us," Janet's mother said. "The accident we were in wasn't an accident. The woman deliberately tried to kill us and she almost succeeded with hitting us head-on."
"I did die but they brought me back," Kim said with a smile.
"Magic was used to kill them so we were justified in bringing them back," agent Bunny said.
"You mean they actually did die?" I asked trying to make some sense of all this.
"Yes," agent Wolf said with a nod.
"Why did you bring them back then?"
"Because they were killed using magic," agent Bunny said. "Also we needed a description of the suspect and why she wanted them dead. From various descriptions we believe that the woman is Bethany Milansky and that she wanted the Chronivac."
"Did you get it out of my locker?" Janet asked sounding a bit worried.
"Unfortunately two girls had already retrieved it from your locker," agent Wolf said shaking her head. "From the description Mr. Vöndershön gave us the two girls were Ann Nobel and Erika Novak."
"Did Beth get them?" Janet asked fear in her voice.
"That's unknown at this point," agent Wolf said. "We did detect the Chronivac's energy around the Novak house. It's possible that they were messing around with it and transformed themselves into an animal. Unfortunately we can't confirm this since the Chronivac has disappeared too."
"Could Beth have taken it?" Janet's mother asked.
"That is a possibility we're looking into," agent Wolf said with a nod. "For now all we can do is look for anything that has the Chronivac's energy signature about them and hope we find Miss Nobel and Novak." She turned to me and said, "Now as for you. You shouldn't know that they're alive. This knowledge could put you in danger."
"I'm a shifter so I'm safer than others and I can keep a secret," I said looking back. Remembering that I still have dog ears I concentrate and they shrank back down to my regular ears with the fur retracting back in.
Agent Wolf nodded and said, "I guess we'll trust you to keep this secret. You'll have to act sad like Janet is dead. Can you do that?"
"Yes," I said confident that I could do that.
"Good," agent Wolf said smiling. "Now after the funeral you won't see Janet until next week. When you do she'll look different and have a new name. Does anyone know that you love her?"
I blushed and said, "Just everyone here."
"Then it won't be strange when you become her girlfriend," agent Wolf said smiling.
"Whoa I don't like girls that way," Janet said holding up her hands in a stop gesture.
"Well we can change that," agent Bunny said being serious.
"Changing our minds wasn't part of the agreement," Janet's mother said looking a bit angry.
"We're not going to do that," agent Wolf said giving agent Bunny a look. "We do want you two to be girlfriends and act like it. It will help your cover."
"But I don't want to pretend to like girls," Janet nearly whined.
"There are gays and lesbians who marry and make love to the opposite sex to cover their true nature," agent Wolf said. "We're not saying that you have to like it but it will be part of your cover. Now I think Ariel needs to go home. Remember to keep this a secret."
I nodded and said, "Alright." I gave Janet a peck on the cheek before leaving and going home.
