Jen's gradual transformation into a cow isn't just having a profound effect on her school life, either. Her mom treats her like a cow- she eats bovine feed and sleeps outside now. Worse yet, she speaks of her daughter as if she were a mindless animal. On the phone, she happily discusses her only child as if she were a piece of livestock, commenting on how her weight is coming along and how she will give birth to some lovely calves one day. Troubling still, she has commented once or twice that the house seems to be a bit small these days to accomodate a full-size heifer (which is what Jen seems to be on the path to), and she's considering just handing her over to the school permanently.
One morning when Jen arrives at school, she is informed of her new mate. His name is Daniel Morris, a well-toned young man/bull. Jen had always had a crush on him as a girl, and as a cow she couldn't complain too much about the decision. A flash came over her, reminding her of the more pressing task of reversing this curse before it was too late, but her bovine instincts were creeping in and tempting her to just accept her fate and accept her assignment with Daniel.
While sitting in milking class, chewing cud, Jen looks out the window to see several of her colleagues being led into a truck by men in overalls. She leans over to her friend Michelle.
"Where are they going?" Jen whispers.
"Where do you think?" Michelle whispers back. "You know what humans use cows for."
"Milking?" Jen croaks.
Michelle laughs. "You're so naiive, Jen. It's adorable."
