Fisk Reese was home alone when there was a knock on the door. When he went to see who it was, however, there was nobody there. He opened the door to look for someone, but instead he found a large package on the doorstep. It was addressed to him, but he hadn’t ordered anything.
Fisk was a little suspicious, so he took the package up to his room to check it out. Carefully slicing the packing tape with a pen knife, he opened the package to find a bunch of computer stuff: a CD-ROM, a USB cable, a couple adapters for different devices, and what looked like a remote control with a screen. There was also an instruction letter. Opening the letter, Fisk read:
Dear recipient of the new Chronivac Version 5.0;
We at TransDem Labs are proud to present to you our newest invention. The Chronivac 5.0 is a highly advanced piece of technology which has the power to change anything you choose. Please take the time to read the enclosed instructions for proper use of the software. We hope you enjoy your gift and make good use of it. We will be monitoring everything you change for future inventions, but please be aware that, since this is a random distribution, no change you make will be associated with you personally. Most importantly, have fun!
Sincerely,
The Chronivac Team
Fisk was a little confused about all of this, but he decided that reading the instructions would help things make sense. By reading the attached instructions, Fisk found that the Chronivac could change anything he wanted to just by entering its stats and using the slider bars to adjust characteristics.
He turned on his laptop and inserted the CD. Though the program was obviously large, the software only took five minutes to fully download. Once it had, Fisk plugged in the remote thingy (what the instructions called the “emitter”) and started up the program.
Deciding to start small for safety, Fisk scanned his pet bearded dragon, Drake. The lizard’s stats appeared in the boxes on the screen.
NAME: DRAKE
SPECIES: BEARDED DRAGON
AGE: 4
LENGTH: 13 INCHES
WEIGHT: 16 OZ.
Fisk then selected the species option and changed “Bearded Dragon” to “Tarantula”. After clicking the Save button, he watched in amazement as his pet lizard almost immediately changed into a tarantula. The animal, however, did not act as though anything was different. Fisk looked back at the screen and realized he had not set any mental changes, so the default option was “Unaware” in order to prevent panic and confusion.
“Cool!” Fisk exclaimed, “Now, what should I do next?”
