"Oh, yes." Lisa agreed as both girls stripped naked and dove into the pool. Fully submerged underwater, both girls watched as the other's legs merged; their feet fanning into fins and scales spreading until they completely covered their tails.
"Wow!" Kendra said, admiring Lisa's pink tail. "Your tail is beautiful!"
"So is yours." Lisa said, realizing she never got to get a good look at the school pool.
"Thank you." Replied a blushing Kendra.
The two girls spent the next half hour showing off their underwater grace. The two mermaids spun and tumbled underwater, dancing around each other like they were performing an underwater ballet.
“Race you!” Lisa said suddenly as she took off. Kendra propelled herself forward with her tail as fast as she could, following Lisa as she swam laps around the pool. Lisa, clearly had more time and experience swimming as a mermaid, having her own sufficiently sized pool and all. Though Kendra’s secret trips to a secluded lake near her home did help her keep up with her new finned friend.
“You’re amazing!” Kendra shouted.
“Thanks.” Lisa replied.
Eventually, they decided to just lie down at the bottom of the pool. “I never knew there was another mermaid at our school.” Kendra said. “Do you know any other mermaids?”
“Just my mother, and even then, she sacrificed that life when she married my father. You see, when a mermaid pledges her life to a human by speaking the words that join them in matrimony, she sacrifices her mermaid heritage. However, should a daughter be conceived, there’s a slim chance she will come to inherit the mermaid tail anywhere from their 13th to 18th birthdays. I grew a tail bathing for my 16th birthday party. But enough about me, how did your parents react to your tail.”
“Uh, they don’t know about it.” Kendra replied. “But if one of my parents are merpeople, why wouldn’t they warn me?”
“It would only be your mother because all mermaids are female. As for why they wouldn’t warn you, would you have believed them?”
“Probably not. I guess I’ll tell them when I get home. Thank you, Lisa. You’ve been such a good friend today.”
Kendra swam over to Lisa, wrapped her arms around her and gave her new friend a hug.
