Nate walked through the park alone, enjoying the unseasonably cool summer air. Nate always preferred the cooler seasons to the typically hot and muggy summers. He was preoccupied by the fact that he had recently turned 30 and felt he had accomplished very little in his life. Sure, he had a job and friends and considered himself very lucky to have both. But he felt like something was missing. He longed for a long, lasting relationship. And, perhaps even more, he craved some adventure.
A very special pinwheel seed floated down from the tree tops, landing on Nate's head. This particular seed was a magic seed, granting the deepest desire in a person's heart. For Nate, he had longed to be a hero. A huge fan of comic books, he wished that he had superpowers, that he could help those in trouble. However, being pudgy and out of shape, that was never an option for him. The seed fed on these desires, recognizing his desire to do good and protect the innocent, granted his wish and in turn giving him the superpowers of his favorite hero, Superman.
Nate walked home, feeling a bit tired after his walk and laid down on his bed. He quickly drifted off to sleep, awaking the next morning to his beeping alarm clock. He looked himself over and noticed immediately that his gut, which usually hung out in front of him was curiously missing. Nate jumped up and went to the bathroom to check himself out in the mirror. Gone was his usual, pudgy self, but was replaced with a muscular, cut replacement. Nate couldn't help but smile. Whatever was happening, this was an improvement.
It took him a couple of minutes to realize but he didn't even need his glasses anymore. He could see perfectly without them, and even figured out how to get his x-ray vision to kick in. That was when Nate figured out, at least somewhat, what happened. Somehow, he had been imbued with the powers of his favorite hero. He tried the laser vision next, accidentally setting fire to a box of tissues in the process.
After extinguishing the flaming tissues, and realizing he wasn't able to get burned in the process, he walked to the hall closet and pulled out a crow bar from his collection of tools. He bent it in half like it was nothing. He dropped it on the ground, in shock.
"Oh my god, what is happening to me?" he whispered aloud. He had to tell someone. He couldn't keep this to himself. He grabbed his keys and wallet and left to go to...
