"Oy!"
The voice catches you off-guard.
Looking around, you see nothing but a few birds flitting by in the sky, the distant trees, and the shadowy basement beyond the magical door. A brown bunny hops nearby but you see no one else.
"Hey: you there! What th' heck are you?"
You blink. The rabbit has rocked back on its hind legs and is semi-standing, glaring at you.
"Ex...excuse me?" you stammer.
"Yeah, you..." The rabbit flicks its whiskers and rubs one ear in both paws, nervously. "I mean you smell like a fox and kinda look like one, but you're as big as a faerie and as muscled as an ox. What th' heck are you?"
You blink, still startled by the talking rabbit.
"You ... you mean you don't normally have foxes like ... like me, here?" you ask.
The rabbit raises an eyebrow. "You're a fox?" he asks.
You nod.
Talking rabbits. Alien vistas. Doors to nowhere.
That's it, you've gone insane.
"Ooooohhhh, wait a sec... Is that the Thaumaturge's Door?" the rabbit asks. He inclines his head towards the door frame, curiously.
You just manage a shrug.
"Wow... No one's seen a Thaumaturge Door in ages! You must be one of his experiments, right?"
"I dunno," you say. "I guess?"
The rabbit shakes his head. "You're half-human, aren't you? And unless some Talavarri berries grew around here overnight and you over-dosed on a mouthful of them, this was done to you." The rabbit sounded increasingly interested. "You've got to see the Wizard," he said, finally. "He can sort this out..."
You blink. "See the Wizard?"
The rabbit nods. "Of Lost Isle; the island you're on." His voice sounds quieter, now, and tinged with concern. "You really are lost, aren't you? But, trust me, if you ever want to figure out what's going on with your life, you'll have to go see the Wizard..."
You gulp.
A large portion of you wants to go screaming back through the door -back into your world- and never look back.
But you'd be an animal in a world of humans. You'd never live a normal life again; you'd never have another boyfriend again, that much is certain!
But trusting this strange creature just on his word?
You just don't know...
