Slowly, you inch toward the Flower Cocoon. Your heart races knowing that there’s a real possibility that entering could change you forever; but what choice do you have? There’s a word for creatures this tall with so few means of escape or defense: prey. How could you survive at this height without the ability to fly? You doubt these fairies would want to carry you everywhere, nice as they are. Who knows, maybe fairy wings would look good on you.
Finally, you step inside the Cocoon, and lay against the back as you watch the petals close. Suddenly, an exquisite, soothing aroma fills the floral capsule. The scent is so relaxing you fall asleep.
You suddenly find yourself floating in a strange outer space field full of dazzling color. An ornate mirror appears before you. You see your reflection as it changes before your eyes. Your hair becomes a light purple, your ears elongate and you turn to look at your side in anticipation of the next step. Sure enough, light purple wings rise from your back. You turn back to your front to look at your new body, and it’s beautiful. As the dreamscape fades away, you hear a voice, “Welcome to our world, Amethyst.”
You open your eyes to see the subtle pink of the sun filtering through the thick petals of the Flower Cocoon. A crack of light widens and you wince as the bright sunlight pours in. As soon as your eyes adjust, you see Tulip holding a lilac dress and Rhoda standing right beside her. You emerge from the cocoon and spread your wings. Something felt different about the area, but you paid it no mind as your friends spoke up.
“They’re beautiful!” Tulip said.
“Yeah, you make a pretty good-looking fairy, Amy.” Rhoda added.
“Yeah,” you say, looking at your wings, “they’re wonderful. Oh, by the way, call me Amethyst. At least as long as I’m a fairy.”
“Well, it is a good fairy name;” Rhoda said, “and you need one anyway to blend in.”
“Here, we had this made for you.” Tulip said as she handed the dress to you.
After putting it on you pose for your new friends. “How do I look?” You ask.
“Like a true fairy.” Tulip said.
“Agreed.” Rhoda added.
You leap up into the air and start to flutter your wings. The exhilaration of your first flight soon dissipated as you realized why everything felt strange.
