All the commotion from John sent ripples throughout the pool. John, though hysterical, was amazed by the fact that he could feel the waves as if the entire pool as an extension of his body. His consciousness drifted to the edges of the blue goo and he was shocked when he felt Mary.
"Mary!" he thought.
"What, John?" came Mary's sleepy voice in John's head. It was as if she were waking up from a deep sleep or sedation. "Did we fall asleep in the pool?"
John tried to think of where to begin to explain the situation, but Mary knew instantly what had happened. The physical contact between their gelatinous bodies meant that they were of a single mind.
The pink goo began to quiver as Mary mentally screamed. It boiled as a bird's beak bubbled to the surface and let out a piercing, sustained screech.
"We have to calm down," said John in a soothing tone. He had automatically used the term "We" since he'd begun to think of himself and Mary as a single being.
Two grapefruit sized balls rose out of the pink goo. Mary was tired of seeing through John's eyes, which she couldn't directly control. Translucent pink sheaths slipped over the eyes as they blinked and trained themselves onto the blue stalks. Mary and John looked at each other for a long moment.
"We have to change ourselves back," they thought in unison. Followed at the same instant with the reply: "How are we going to do that?"
