Jake watched as Melissa started to fiddle with the settings on the Transformation Gun.
"'Anthro?'" she said. "'Horse, Cow, Dog, Cat, Monkey...' Is this thing for real? Seems pretty elaborate for a joke." She turned the gun around in her hands, examining it from every angle. "Weird stuff..." She ran her hand along the barrel. "...but kinda cool too. Maybe I should test it out..." She stared right down the barrel of the gun. "...just to see if it works."
Hearing that, Jake decided that he had to stop her. He turned the corner and came bounding into the room on all fours. "Stop!" he shrieked in his monkey voice.
Seeing some strange hairy beast apparently charging for her, Melissa jumped and shrieked in return. In her panic, she fumbled the gun around in her hands. Her finger caught on the trigger, and an invisible beam fired from the gun, hit a framed photo on the wall, then bounced off it to a mirror across the room, and finally ricocheted right back to Melissa.
"Melissa, wait," said Jake trying to calm her, concerned that she might drop the gun or try shoot him with it. "It's me, your brother."
"J-Jake?" she asked, looking very flustered. "W-What? Is that you?"
Jake nodded, but then he looked concerned. Melissa was starting to look strange. At first he thought it was just because she was startled. Now as he looked at her more closely, she appeared to be less human than she had been only a minute ago. "Um, Melissa," he said, realizing that she had just shot herself. "What do the settings on the gun say right now?"
"Um," said Melissa, still flustered. She turned the gun around in her hands to read its settings. "It says..."
