As Andrea flew, her thoughts turned to when she first became a fairy, and the events leading up to it.
Andrew was walking along a forest path near a cabin he owned when he heard a high-pitched shriek and the sound of a predator. He picked up a fist-sized rock and ran to the source of the scream. A coyote was attacking something small, but human-shaped. Andrew couldn’t see its entire body, but it screamed for help, and that was reason enough to defend it.
As the coyote leaned over its victim Andrew threw the rock at the beast shouting, “Hey, shoo, go away!”
Though the coyote lost interest in its prey, it was clearly ticked at Andrew. As he grabbed a large stick to defend himself, the coyote bared its fangs and rushed at him. Despite his fear, Andrew took a fighting stance. The coyote leaped at him, but at the last second, he swung the stick, striking the beast right across the face, knocking it off to the side. When the coyote got back up, it ran off.
Andrew ran to the beat’s victim, and his heart skipped a beat when he found that it was a fairy girl! She was lying down, bloodied and barely conscious. She was at least 10 inches tall with translucent butterfly wings adorning her back. Her clothing was regal in appearance save for the fact it was torn up in the attack. Andrew carefully picked up the injured fae and brought her back to his cabin.
Andrew laid the fairy on an old pillow. As he started treating her wounds she asked, “Why are you doing this for me; because a healthy fairy would bring more profit than an injured one?”
“How could you think such a thing?” Andrew scolded. “I do this because it’s the right thing to do. You may look different, but you’re still a person in need.”
“A wonderful philosophy to be sure. I’m Princess Selena by the way.”
“Hello, Princess Selena. I’m Andrew.”
He spent the day treating her wounds, feeding and caring for her. They also spent their time talking to each other and getting to know one another. Finally, The Selena sat up on the pillow.
“Wait, don’t go moving around too much!” Andrew said.
“Don’t worry, I can take it from here.” The Selena said. Her body suddenly started to glow as her bandages unraveled revealing the lack of even scars from the coyote injuries. She then flew to her gown and waved her hand across it, repairing the rips and tears caused by the attack before she put it on.
Selena flew up to Andrew. “Well then, Andrew, you have saved my life, and that demands a reward.”
“What kind of reward.” Andrew said.
“A fairy whose life was saved gains the power to grant their savior one wish. As long as it does not violate the laws of the universe, and it is within my power, it will be granted.”
“Well, let’s see.” Andrew thought about all the things he could wish for, but his thoughts repeatedly turned toward one thing; the fairy fluttering before him. “All I wish for is to be with you. I… I love you! That is my wish.”
Selena was stunned; she never expected such a request; less so, the sincerity of Andrew’s words. She turned away, with a sad look upon her face, she said, “I’m… sorry, but I cannot grant that wish.”
“Why not?” Andrew asked.
“Because fairies and humans are… incompatible. There is no way we can be together in the way you wish.”
Andrew thought for a second and said, “What if I was a fairy, too?”
Selena turned to Andrew and said, “You would be female as our race have no men.”
“Then, so be it.” Andrew said. “I wish to become a fairy!”
Selena knew Andrew’s words were sincere; and with a smile, she raised her hands and said, “I grant your wish. Now, become a fairy!”
A bright light engulfed Andrew, which then began to shrink. Within the light, he felt his body reshaping; hair growing, face rounding, shoulders and waist narrowed, hips expanding, arms and legs thinning as hands and feet shrank and grew slender, and finally, his manhood vanishing. Curling over, she then felt a surge of energy throughout her body. Her ears elongated and sharpened before she felt a gentle, sustained tug on her back. Four broad, thin sheets slowly sprouted from her back.
Andrea, as she decided to call herself, uncurled as she set down upon the bed and the glow subsided, revealing a 9 inch tall, female fairy with long sky-blue hair, crystalline butterfly wings and a simple pink sundress replacing her old clothing.
Andrea looked over her new form, particularly the wings, with awe. Selena approached the new fairy and, taking her hand they flew to a mirror to get a better look. Andrea saw her reflection and smiled. “This is wonderful! Thank you, Selena!”
“You’re welcome… my love.” Selena said as she laid a loving kiss upon Andrea’s lips.
“Your highness, are you ready?” A fairy asked, breaking Andrea from her trance.
“Oh, yes I am. Open the portal.” Andrea replied.
The fairy pointed her hands at an archway woven from vines. She chanted a spell causing a bright glow to appear in the arch, which Andrea stepped through. She emerged in the human world, taking the shape of a human woman.
