The chemical that spilled into the water supply quickly dissipated. Although thousands of
people in the city drank the tainted water, few of them got a large enough dose of the
water to make any noticeable change. This is the story of one of those few who did get a
large dose.
Jeff was talking on the phone when he first noticed the change. He answered the phone,
"Herro, this is Jerff." Throughout the whole conversation he noticed a tendency to make his
words sound growly. His girlfriend on the phone noticed too and wondered why Jeff was
growling at her. She couldn't tell if he was angry or trying to be sexy. Jeff tried to pass it off
as being sexy but he was so surprised himself that he didn't do very well at sounding sexy.
So finally he said, "I arf think I might have ruf developed a throat grrr infection. Can I call
you back?" He started panting as he finished the conversation.
Jeff went to look in the mirror, he looked normal. He didn't look ill but he did feel strange.
His senses of hearing and smell seemed extra sensitive and he was drooling a little. He
also felt a strange urge to be bent over or to crawl. He decided he needed medical help so
he went and got in his car.
As he drove, he rolled down the window and stuck his head outside. He didn't notice that
his mouth was open and his tongue was hanging out as he drove. He did notice new smells
that were enticing him, smells he didn't recognize yet. What he did recognize was urges to
run around, chase frisbees, eat raw meat and chase small animals like cats and squirrels.
Jeff had started driving toward the hospital but as he saw a veterinary clinic, on the way, he
changed his mind and pulled in.
About that time, his clothes started to feel uncomfortable so he quickly stripped them off
before getting out of his car and walking into the veterinary clinic.
