The kiss didn’t last much longer than a second, but that was enough time for a sharp jolt of energy to jump from Kendra’s lips into Drew’s body. Kendra immediately broke off and sat up on Drew’s lap, befuddled.
“You felt that, jolt too?” Drew asked.
“Yeah, and it didn’t feel like static either.” Kendra replied as she slid back into the water. “What do you suppose it was?”
“I don’t know, but my legs and hair are starting to itch.” Drew said as he sat up on the chair and started to scratch his head and legs. Kendra noticed that Drew’s hair was starting to grow. He winced in pain, causing the pool chair to capsize, sending him into the water.
Kendra wrapped her arms around Drew and pulled his head above the surface. Before her eyes, Drew’s face took on a more feminine look as his medium-brown hair fell to the level of his earlobes. His grunts became feminine as Kendra felt his shoulders narrow and a pair of mounds balloon out from his chest.
Kendra then remembered that Drew mentioned an itch on his legs. She submerged and saw that scales of a copper sheen had begun developing just below Drew’s caved in waist. She pulled Drew’s swim trunks off to find her new friend could no longer be called a “he” anymore. She backed up and could only watch as Drew finished her transformation into a mermaid.
“Drew, are you okay? Drew? DREW!” Kendra shouted. Suddenly, the new mermaid stirred, opened her eyes and sat up. It didn’t take her long to realize she was underwater; and that she was now a mermaid.
“I’m… a mermaid?” Drew said, looking over her body, still digesting her situation.
“Drew, I swear, I didn’t know anything like this would happen.” Kendra said, sobbing. “I mean, I kissed my ex-boyfriend, but I was human, but it was after I started changing. Maybe it was…”
“Kendra, Kendra, stop!” Drew said, placing her hands on Kendra’s shoulders. “I… I think this is MY fault. Just before you kissed me… Um, boy this is embarrassing for me to admit but I wished I could be like you. Not necessarily a merMAID, but I guess that’s all there are; I don’t know. In any case, I remember in the previews for Aquamarine, that she said if you help a mermaid, you get a wish. I guess my wish came true; and I LOVE it!” Drew said before she started swimming laps around the pool giggling like a schoolgirl.
“You’re… weird.” was all that Kendra could say.
“So, I’ve been told, but who cares.” Drew said. Suddenly, she stopped. “Say, let’s head inside and see what I look like.” She suggested. “Presuming I can even become human again.”
“I see no reason you wouldn’t,” Kendra said, “you did wish to be like me, a human who can turn into a mermaid.” Kendra said as she and Drew climbed out of the pool and started drying their tails off.
