The rest of the graduation celebration had gone on without a problem. Kylie was even able to return to the
stage and give her speech, this time without fainting. Laura and Tony tried to enjoy themselves but both
wondered if what had happened meant that Kylie's evil side would return. The students of Glendale High
returned to their homes after a fun time and the night was peaceful.
The next day, Laura met Tony downtown for coffee. She had texted him that she wanted to talk about what had
happened, and what might be yet to come, and the Sorcerer Supreme had readily agreed. They found a small table
near a window and settled down. Laura had a mocha and Tony had a latte.
"So what do you think happened?" Laura asked. "I mean, it seemed like she had a flash of being Kyle, in spite
of the memory wipe. She was supposed to just remember her powers and how to use them, right?"
Tony nodded, sipping his drink. "Yes. She shouldn't remember being Kyle at all. I'm not sure what to say.
Perhaps the curse is responsible. It's still an ancient form of magic I do not fully understand, and it's more
powerful than even my vast magic. Still..." He looked at the teen across from him. "It is a passive force, or
so I believe. I don't think it can do anything."
Laura took a few swallows of her own coffee. "Okay, so the curse might be messing with your magic. Causing it
to come undone or something. That could mean she remembers everything and all the goodness you gave to her
could vanish."
The boy shook his head. "I don't think the goodness can just disappear. She might remember being Kyle, but
she'll also remember being Kylie and how good her life has been. I think that might be enough to temper the
anger she once had."
"I hope so," Laura said. "We should keep an eye on her and give her any help and support we can. She was a
victim, too."
"Agreed."
The pair turned their conversation to more genial subjects, such as going to Glendale College and getting a
summer job. They chatted and laughed together as good friends until they finished their drinks, then continued
talking and just enjoying each other's company. As Tony considered asking Laura to lunch, a shrill ringing
pierced the air. Both teens instantly tensed and looked outside. The wail of sirens was already in the
distance and getting closer. Across from the coffee shop, an unmarked white van peeled away from a Bank of
America, staff members flooding into the street after to watch it race off.
Faint shouts of "Robbery!" filtered through the coffee shop door.
Wordlessly the two heroes left their seats and bolted out into the street. They quickly darted down into an
adjacent alleyway. Tony raised his arms and uttered a mystical chant, transforming his clothing into the
flowing robes of the Sorcerer Supreme. Laura pulled off her sweater to reveal the shiny blue top of Wonder
Gal.
"Go!" she shouted as she pulled off her pants. "I'll catch up." With a nod, Dr. Mage levitated up above the
rooftops and floated off in pursuit.
It only took a few moments for Laura to finish changing into her costume. She bundled her clothes up and
shoved them into her shoulder bag and stashed it behind a dumpster. Then, using her incredible strength and
agility, she leaped upwards and climbed a fire escape to the rooftops above.
Wonder Gal paused to get her bearings then took off sprinting in the direction the van had gone. She easily
leaped over the gaps between buildings, barely breaking her stride. A loud screech caught her attention a few
blocks away and she grinned as she caught sight of the van. It seemed to be doubling back. There was no sign
of Dr. Mage so Wonder Gal took it upon herself to leap from the roof onto the top of the van.
The vehicle swerved but Wonder Gal held on. She managed to slide to the driver's side and with a burst of
strength reached down to punch out the window and the driver in one motion. The van veered wildly and Wonder
Gal had to hold on tight. The vehicle careened around a corner as another thug tried to grab the wheel but it
was too out of control. Spinning, twisting, the van lost traction on its side wheels and started to tip as it
headed straight toward a crowd of pedestrians.
"Great Wall of Asgard!" shouted Dr. Mage, appearing from somewhere above. His incantation caused the pavement
to heave and split as a wall of stone burst from the ground. The van hit it, stopping its forward momentum and
knocking out the thugs inside. Wonder Gal was thrown from the roof of the vehicle but used the momentum to
twist artfully in the air and land on her feet. She smiled up at her colleague.
"My baby!" a high, nasally voice cried. Wonder Gal turned to see a baby carriage rolling toward her,
apparently having escaped its mother's grasp. She jumped forward and stopped it gently.
"Don't worry little one," she said soothingly as she lowered the bonnet. Inside the carriage was not a baby,
however, but what looked like a gun turret. "What the-!" Wonder Gal cried but it was too late. The turret took
aim and fired.
