As the car drove up the long driveway and turned a corner revealing a large house, sitting in a shaded valley, surrounded by a fairly dense forest. The car pulled up in front of the house just as a middle-aged woman stepped out of the house, followed by a teenage boy.
The Carer and Adam stepped out of the car. Adam was a little nervous and it wasn't hard to tell. He clutched his backpack tightly. The Carer walked around to introduce Adam to his new family.
"Adam, this is for foster mom, Anne, and her son Nate," said the Carer.
"Hi Adam," said Anne.
"Hey buddy," said Nate, smiling.
"Hi," replied Adam.
The Carer bid farewell to Adam and Anne and Nate led him inside. They showed him his new room and left him to unpack.
Adam overheard Nate and his Mom talking in the kitchen.
"You know, we're going to have to tell him at some point," said Nate.
"I know honey, it's just not the easiest thing to talk about to someone who doesn't know about us."
"Well, he's going to find out about it pretty damn quick, one way or the other," replied Nate.
"I was meaning to talk to you about that," replied Anne. "Do you think you could refrain from, you know, just for a couple of nights until we have a chance to talk to him about it?"
"Really? You might as well ask me not to breathe!" exclaimed Nate.
"You know, you could stand to go a couple of nights without it, I've gone months and I'm doing fine!" replied Anne, matching him beat for beat.
"I'm happy for you, but I'm just not able to put it away that easy," replied Nate, walking off to his room.
As they all sat down to dinner that evening, both Anna and Nate learned more about Adam and the fact that he had grown up in an orphanage for much of his life. Likewise, they told him about themselves, just the two of them living alone since Nate's Dad died when he was younger. After that they played some games until everyone retired for the night.
Adam tossed and turned, finding himself having difficulty falling asleep in a new house. He heard one of the other bedroom doors open and then close. He listened closely as the individual walked downstairs. He heard the front door unlock and open, then close. Adam quietly got out of bed, walked across the room and looked out his window.
He watched intently as Nate slowly pulled off his t-shirt and undid his pants. He marveled at his skinny, but muscular body and watched him walk out into the yard. At first he wondered if they were some sort of religious nudists or something when he saw Nate fall to his knees. Fur started to grow from the middle of his back, outward as his body itself seemed to grow and swell. Holy shit, thought Adam.
Adam watched, enraptured as the changes progressed. Nate's feet stretched out into digigrade paws, tail grew from the base of his spine. His face slowly pushed out into a snout as his pointed ears moved to the top of his head. He watched as Nate stood up, let out a long howl and ran off into the woods.
"Werewolves," he said quietly to himself. "I'm living with werewolves. Cool."
