“You will be evaluated by our High Queen,” Starla said, “and if she deems you worthy, she will perform a ritual that will… turn you into a fairy.”
“Turn me into a fairy?” I said. It wasn’t a horrifying thought, but it wasn’t something I was eager to go through with either.
“Because we’re so close, the usual memory alterations would never hold; and believe me when I say the alternatives are unthinkable.”
“What are those?” I asked out of my usual morbid curiosity.
“Banishment from the human world for Starla either way,” Came a stern female voice behind me. I turned to see three fairies hovering before me, all female; wearing armor over dresses matching the colors of their wings and hair, along with silver wands tipped with small pointed jewels, “but you would either be imprisoned in the fairy world, or you would be sent back here, cut off from your friend forevermore;” continued the lead fairy, whose colors were blue and silver and had more ornate armor and a more detailed skirt, which fell longer in the back, on her dress. Most likely she’s the high ranking one of the group, “which shall be your fate as well if you are deemed unworthy by the High Queen.”
“That won’t happen Sonia;” Starla shouted, “I’ve known Lillian all my life, and I have no doubt that she will be found worthy by the High Queen.”
“Then, let us not delay this any longer than we already have, sister.” Sonia said before turning to the yellow and green fairy. “Topaz, resize Lillian. Rose,” she said to the red and white fairy, “help me open the portal.”
“Yes, Captain!” They said. Topaz pointed her wand at me and the whole room started getting larger. I soon was the same height as Starla, just like when we were both human sized.
Starla picked me off the ground and we held each other’s hands as Topaz and Rose escorted us through the portal and into a beautiful throne room formed out of branches, leaves and vines. At the back of the room stood two beautiful women.
One was wearing a magnificent gown like she was wearing a rainbow and a large golden crown on her head of long purple and light blue hair with matching wings spread out wide behind her, the other had a lesser, but still exquisite silver and gold gown with a smaller silver crown on a head of brown and green with matching wings flared out from her back.
“The High Queen?” I asked Starla.
“Yes, High Queen Amethyst; and to her right is her wife, Queen Ivy.”
“So she’s also…”
“Since all fairies are girls, it stands to reason. As will you be once you’re a fairy. I knew you were fine with me, but I didn’t want to force this on you. That’s another reason I didn’t want to tell you.”
The idea of me becoming a lesbian fairy was an odd thought, but as I looked upon Starla, there was only one way I could respond. I leaned in and gave her a small kiss on the lips; they tasted sweet. I smiled and said, “I’ll adjust.”
“Lillian,” High Queen Amethyst said, “approach the throne.” I did as I was told, the spastic butterflies in my stomach notwithstanding. Queen Amethyst approached me. “I shall look into your heart and see if you are worthy to join our kind.” She placed her hand on my chest and closed her eyes. After a moment, she opened her eyes sharply, looked at me and said, “Oh, my! You are indeed worthy to join our kin!” Queen Amethyst turned to Queen Ivy and said, “Make preparations for the ritual at once.”
“Yes, my love.” Ivy said.
“It’s not going to hurt, is it?” I asked.
“The transformation will be slow and intense, but it will not be painful.” Amethyst answered. Her words having reassured me, I began to truly look forward to becoming a fairy.
