Jake watched the longest till the Coach ordered him back into school. A little chuckle was heard all too well by Bill as Dickie thrust deep for fun and more fun. Jake thought how proper for the class bully to end up as a nutless mule.
The talk of Muledom was on everbodies' mind and the jokes went wild.
Jake could not wait till the final bell and was on his ten speed heading for home when a truck passed him by. Aboard the truck was a mule screaming his horror as he knew his life had turned a final sort of corner.
Jake peddled along till perchance he saw Lindy a girl from school. A nice girl, not like most of them all caught up in fashion and styles.
A yell of greeting produced a friendly wave to come and talk.
Lindy's family had a Seedcorn farm and her Father had become quite rich. As Lindy and Jake talked the story of the mule came up as Lindy felt sad for the poor beast. As they spoke Jake let it slip that Bill Ledbetter had left school, and he heard he wasn't coming back.
Lindy knew Bill and was surprised he would leave school mid year. She asked how Jake knew this since Bill was not at all friendly with people like Jake.
Jake suddenly felt he'd spoke too much on something which so far had not been known by anyone save maybe Dickie. Lindy kept a good eye watching Jake rub his pants pocket. As he got up she jumped on his back and began to dig for what he had hidden.
"NO, no!" screamed Jake as he felt Lindy's hand grab his magical medallion.
Pulling her hand free she oggled the bright object while holding it up high in the air.
"Give it back, please Lindy, please!" begged Jake.
Lindy loved a good chase and suddenly took off on the run. Around the vehicles parked about the barn she went. Dashing this way and that with Jake yelling for her to stop and give the bobble back.
Bang went the barn's door as she ran in to hide.
Jake followed but stopped as he stood looking at dozens of places to hide. "Come on' give it back to me, you don't understand what might happen!" Jake called out.
Jake walked just inside the door and stood looking for where Lindy had gone.
"Surprise!" yelled Lindy as she jumped from the hay loft onto Jakes back. Crash Jake went to the barn floor and Lindy laughing was on top of him. The wind knocked out of him he did not move, till the rope went over his head.
"Come on beg for it Jake, I got you lassoed' and bound like Daddy's prize winning steer!" said Lindy.
Jake whirled his head around and said, "Your Daddy grows seedcorn and hasn't any animals!"
"Oh but we do, Daddy has six steers for fattening and slaughter! He used the rope to drag them from the feedlot to their ultimate fates, a good steak!" said Lindy with a grin.
Jake started to speak but suddenly both voice and face began to look like that of a Angus steer.
