A feeling of dread swept over Amy as she saw her friend dive beneath the waves. Somehow she got the feeling that Lina was going to be a mermaid forever. Tears welled up in her eyes because she didn’t want to lose her best friend. Then she remembered that there was another necklace in the car. As fast as her legs could move, she ran to the car, got the necklace and returned to the rock.
Amy removed her jeans and panties, waded into the ocean, took a deep breath and put the necklace on. Immediately, she fell into the water as her legs shrank away. A copper-colored tail pushed forth while her feet flattened into fins. As what remained of her legs shrank into her waist, the end of her tail flared out into a beautiful ruffled fin like Lina’s.
As Amy looked over her new mermaid body, she heard a familiar voice shout out. “Amy, what have you done?” Lina was swimming up to her.
“We made a promise once that if either of us were in trouble, we’d face it together; and we would never let anything separate us.”
Lina grabbed Amy. “You idiot; for all we know, this is irreversible!”
“All the more reason I had to do it! Our friendship; no, you mean so much to me!” Amy said. “Whatever happens to us, we’re in it together.”
Lina let go of Amy and wrapped her arms around her. “Thank you, Amy.”
