Josie sighed.
She really didn't want to lie to her father, but she also didn't want to talk about the ring until she knew
more about it. "With great power comes great responsibility" rang in her mind, and even though it was comic
book philosophy, it still rang true. It made sense to her. So, just in case there was some nefarious reason
that might result in any of her family getting hurt if she told them, she decided to hold off for now(Ruthie
notwithstanding, but who would believe her?).
"I can't tell you now, dad. Do you mind if I tell you about it later?"
Dad looked at me with a concerned look on his face, and he subtly twitched his lips as if he were about to say
something, but then he changed his mind and started the engine.
"OK. I won't push it. You can tell me when you're ready. How much later?"
"I don't know" answered Josie honestly.
Shaking his head, he dropped the subject, and drove me to school.
When we got to school, he hugged and kissed me goodbye, which wasn't unusual since we had a good relationship,
but I still wondered if he would treat me differently due to my switched gender. So far he hadn't, but dad was
good at hiding things, so I wasn't sure that it would last.
I met Haley in pre-calc. She was dressed nicely today, but in hindsight she was always dressed to impress.
Maybe I only noticed now because I was her girlfriend. None of the other students nor the teachers looked at
me oddly, nor wondered who I was since the wish I made forbade it, but a couple of the more snobby preppy
girls that Haley was mad at yesterday approached me.
