"I'll move away from everyone else," Mary said.
"What! Didn't you just say we're in this together? With Lissy guiding you, you could rescue me!" yelled Dina.
"She's right, you know. I can see the path from you to her," added Lissy.
"Then you know the map isn't there. Remember, we need to finish this before the cards run out. That means taking chances!" shot back Mary. With that, she pushed her counter in the opposite direction. After to hexes, though, a message popped up.
"Dense vegetation keeps you from seeing a cliff edge. Roll a 4 or higher to stop, or fall."
Mary, looking a bit less sure of herself, said, "50-50 isn't so bad." At the same time, Lissy picked up her hand of cards and frowned. Then Mary rolled, and the die came up one.
"No!" yelled Mary. "What now?!"
Lissy hesitated a moment, but finally threw a card down. "I play Enhancement: Wings. You gain the power of flight. Last time I reward you for being stupid, though."
Until that moment, Mary didn't know one could go from terror to delight so quickly. Her grin turned to a grimace of pain, though, as she felt what could only be her wings growing from her shoulder blades, stretching the back of her shirt, and finally tearing it open. She turned her head from side to side to see her great, white, feathery limbs. The board simply said, "Impact avoided."
"This is great! Why didn't you play this on me earlier? I should be able to find the map in no time, now!" Mary paused and looked thoughtful as she flexed her wings. "Does this mean I can fly in real life, too?"
"Not while we're still playing, you can't! And I didn't play it because I thought it might come in handy in an emergency. What if it was someone else who fell?" replied Lissy.
"Let's not start snapping at each other. I just want to get this over with," said Tobi as he rolled. It came up six. "Great! Well, I'm not taking chances. I'll move toward Dina, if Lissy tells me where to go."
"Good!" Lissy agreed. "You should be in sight of my tree when you move two spaces closer."
On his first hex, though, Tobi hit a problem. "Giant spider web," announced the display. "Roll 5 or 6 on your turn to escape. The spider arrives two turns from now." Tobi tried a roll for this turn, but got a four.
"Well that's no good. Little help?" he asked.
