"I say we check out the Avian Sanctuary," she says with a smile and a nod of her head.
"Okay, I guess so," you answer with a shrug of your shoulders. Couldn't hurt, you figure. It was nearby, and if it was a bore like you kind of thought it was going to be, you could always look at someplace you wanted to see next.
"This is exciting," she said, her grin widening as the two of you headed towards the sanctuary up ahead. You could see it in the distance - it kind of looked like a big biodome of sorts, a fully enclosed topiary with trees and water...
"I've always liked birds. I mean, wow, to be able to fly must be somethin' else, huh?" she kept going, which you thought was kind of odd. You were just going to see the birds, right? Like a zoo?
Finally, you get to the front door, and step inside.
"Huh," you say. "I don't see any birds."
"Guess we're the first ones here," your girlfriend says with a shrug of her shoulders as she takes her jacket off and drapes it on a nearby rock. "God, it's beautiful in here. I love it. Look at all the trees and flowers... it's perfect."
You glance over at her as she walks further into the sanctuary. She's got her back turned to you and you suddenly feel an... odd sensation. Like something... something is wrong. Very wrong. And what did she meant by 'first ones here'? What did that have to do with there being no birds?
"Hey, uh, honey?" you ask, catching up to her and touching her on the shoulder.
She turns around, and what you see causes you to recoil in shock.
"Honey, your face..." it's distended a bit, her mouth protruding and her nose a little flat. "What's happening to your...?"
"Oh, would you relax?" your girlfriend shakes her head. "I'm just turning into a bird."
