Today is the First Day of the Rest of your Afterlife

added 10 years ago BM

Fredrika slipped on her costume. It was a sheet with two eye holes cut into it. It instantly faded into her. Nothing happened. For a moment, Fredrika felt a bit disappointed. Suddenly, Fredrika's body slumped to the floor, lifeless. The funny thing was... Fredrika was still standing!

Confused, Fredrika held up her hand. It was now semitransparent, glowing, and a greenish-blue color. She looked in the mirror; her face looked much the same as her hand. She still looked like the same old Fredrika, only as a ghost. Elated, Fredrika decided to test out her new powers. She hovered a few feet in the air. She then walked straight through the cubicle door and tapped Emma on the Shoulder.

"BOO!" Fredrika shouted as Emma turned her head.

"Oh, Fredrika!" cried Emma, "You scared me! Y-you're a ghost now?"

"I sure am!" boasted Fredrika, turning somersaults in the air.

"H-h-how does it f-feel?" asked Emma nervously.

"It feels great!" said Fredrika, "I feel like I'm made of mist! I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something about not having a body that makes me feel absolutely euphoric!"

"G-good," said Emma, "because they gave me a ghost costume, too."

"Well, for heaven's sake," said Fredrika, "Stop waisting time and put it on!"

"D-do y-you really th-think I'll like being a gh-ghost?" asked Emma.

"I guarantee it," said Fredrika, "Now put on your sheet, for Pete's sake!" Emma did as told and tossed her sheet over her head. It faded into her, and her body crumpled to the ground in a heap, leaving Emma's ghost standing where it had been.

"I'll get you a mirror," said Fredrika. She fetched a mirror and gave it to Emma.

"Say," said Emma, "This see-through look really works for me!"

"Told you you'd like it!" said Fredrika.

"And you were right about how it feels. I feel so light and energized!"

"Awesome!" they both shouted.

"Ah, the new students! I'm so, so, so glad to meet you!" The Ghost of a petite girl with a perky pixie cut floated into the changing room. She looked to be about 16 years old, the same as Emma and Fredrika. She was wearing a belly shirt and ripped jeans.

"Hi," said Fredrika, "I'm Fredrika, and this is Emma."

"Hi-ya!" said the ghost girl, "My name's Olive. I'm president of the ghost student body. I'm here to help you two adjust. First things first; where're your bodies?"

"Well," said Emma, "That's me over there, and Fredrika's body's in the cubicle over there."

"I'll go get it!" said Fredrika. she flew into the cubicle and came out dragging her body.

"Oh dear," said Olive, "So fresh! But don't worry; by next semester, they'll both be nice and rotten."

"Rotten?" asked Emma.

"You got it, Em!" said Olive cheerfully, "The more rotten your body is, the more other ghosts respect you. Shows how long you've bee dead, ya see."

"How rotten is YOUR body?" asked Fredrika.

"Nothing but bones and loving it, Rika!" answered Olive, "Hey, guess what? (No, don't; that was a rhetorical question.) Now, I'm really not supposed to do this, but I really like you two. Watch!" Olive took out some powder and poured it over Emma and Fredrika's corpses. the two cadavers decayed into skeletons within seconds.

"Nothing quite as weird as watching your own body rot before your eyes," said Emma, "Now I know how Joan Rivers feels!" Olive burst into hysterics over that joke.

"What was that stuff?" asked Fredrika.

"I don't really know," said Olive, "Just something I bought from an old witch. All I know is it works. Now let's get your bodies to the graveyard."

The school graveyard was overgrown with vines and full of fog. Black cats yowled and owls hooted out of sight. A full moon shone down on it.

"Good evenin' Olive," said the hunchbacked undertaker.

"Hi, Ivan!" chirped Olive, "I brought some fresh meat. At least, it used to be." Olive blushed a bit.

"Ah!" said Ivan, "The new arrivals!" He scooped up the bodies and tossed each one into a coffin. Each coffin was then chucked into a grave. "I hope you like yer tombstones, lasses."

They inspected their tombstones. The first one read:

In loving memory of Fredrika Susannah Pryce
January 14, 1996 - October 31, 2012
A loving girl and a model student.

The Second Read:

Rest in peace
Emma Josephine Hiller
May 27, 1996 - October 31, 2012
You will be missed.

"That's... strangely touching," remarked Emma.

"Kind of like listening to your own eulogy," said Olive, "I had a lot of fun doing that. Well, I hope you like these plots, 'cause you'll be sleeping here during the day.

"Day?" asked Fredrika.

"Sure," said Olive, "Classes at the Count Dracula School for Ghouls are at night. Most monsters are nocturnal, werewolves need a moon to transform, and vampires can't even come out during the day. Well, now that you've been shown your graves, that takes care of accommodations. I hate to just take off, but Nikki's lost her head again, and she wants me to help her look for it."

"Bye, Olive," said Fredrika, "And thanks for everything!"

"Bye, girls!" said Olive, "Remember, if you need me, I'm just buried four graves to the left of you!" She then flew off to the main school building.
