“So, can you change back into a human like in some of those stories?” Caroline asked.
“I’m not sure, this is the first time I’ve been out of the water since I’ve transformed.” I answer.
“Well, let’s test it out then.” Caroline said as she jumped off the rock and walked over to my beach bag. She pulled out a beach towel and my bikini top and brought them over to me. “Typically, if a mermaid CAN change into human form, they do so when they or at least their tails dry off.” Caroline said as I put the bikini top on.
Caroline gave me the towel and I started patting down my tail. The moment it started becoming uncomfortably dry, my fins started to shrink away. I winced and groaned lightly at the intense sensations I had only begun to experience. My tailbones felt like they were retreating as a groove in the middle of my tail followed the retreating spine.
“I think it’s working!” Caroline said.
“I… gathered!” I said over my groans and the sensation of about a hundred pinpricks as my scales retreated. Muscles shifted and separated as my leg and feet bones regenerated and the deepening groove in my tail split it back into two separate limbs once more.
“Well, now we know it’s reversible.” Caroline said. “That’s good to know.”
“But I still want to know more about how I got this way.” I still felt a draw to the ocean, but it wasn’t as strong as before. It’s as if there was something I wanted in there, but now it was coming to me. “Serenity, she’s coming.”
“Can you see her?”
“No, but she told me that we’d be able to find each other somehow. I guess being friends with a mermaid gives you some kind of mystical bond or something that lets them know these things.”
“Or maybe it was the kiss that creates the bond.” Caroline suggested. “You did tell me she said mermaids expressed friendship with a kiss.”
“You may have a point there, Caroline.”
