Mad Science

Government Business

April hesitated. It was such a small town that you almost knew the cars by heart, and this was one car that April had never seen before. She didn't think anyone owned a black car, especially not one that expensive.

But it was there, and the man who had to own it was just sitting inside. Not moving, not picking up papers or bags to take with him, not even smoking, but just sitting there. And it looked like he was paying more than enough attention to April.

She frowned before she crossed the street. She was nervious...in this world, it's not very smart to talk to complete strangers, but the life of a small town girl had left her with a certain amount of naivety. It wasn't that she didn't know about kidnappers. She just never thought something like that would happen to her.

She reached the car after a quick jog across the empty street and tapped on the window to let the guy know she wanted to talk to him. He rolled it down with an annoyed look to his eyes.

"Need any help?" She asked.

"It's not smart to talk to total strangers, kid." He said, glancing once at Darren Case before giving April his full attention.

"You're just sitting here. And none of that stuff happens in this town."

"That's what they all say. And then you're beating the woods for miles trying to find a six-year-old girl. You ought to be more suspisious." The notion seemed to sit directly on this man's nervious system. Just her innocent conversation had churned up something more than irritation. But there did seem to be a genuine amount of worry in his eyes.

"I just wanted to know if you needed any help." she said, reproached.

"Well, I don't. Go home."

She shrugged, gave her eyes a mental roll, and turned to hurry up the avinue. She only made a few steps when the man seemed to change his mind. "Hey kid!" He called to her.

She turned. He was getting out of the car.

"Here." he handed her a card. She glanced at the name. Kevin Anderson, FBI was what it read.

"That's got my name and my cell number. You call me if anything strange happens over the next few days. Got that?"

"Got it." She said, nodding once.

"Thanks." He walked away...then glanced back once with his intence blue eyes.

April felt a slight rush of giddyness that may or may not have been due to Kevin Anderston's blue eyes.

It wasn't.
