"Was it really that important?" I asked.
Just at that moment the door of the lab opened and two students strode in.
Quyresee looked back at me and said, "Yes."
The two students stopped dead in their tracks when they saw the three of us. Fortunately the door to the lab closed behind them so there was still some amount of privacy right now. The two students were both African-American, one was male and one was female. They looked unsure at the sight of us. I knew they couldn't be surprised by our state of undress, but just by the fact that we were in the lab.
"Um, excuse me, but is Tommy here?" the male asked in a meek voice. At this moment, I realized I'd made a mistake. When I wished for Tommy to change, I forgot to make everyone else forget about him, like I'd done with George's family.
Unfortunately for me, Quyresee spoke before I could. "Oh, hi, Aaron. Hi, Nicole," he said. I had to keep myself from slapping myself in the forehead. Quyresee didn't seem to realize she'd done something I viewed as wrong.
"Do we know you?" asked Nicole in a very bossy tone.
"Of course you do!" Quyresee replied cheerfully. "Just not like this. I am Tommy!"
Aaron and Nicole looked naturally confused and perplexed. I stepped forward and said, "Could you excuse us for a moment, please?" Before they could respond I wished for them to be frozen in place, much as I'd done with Joe's mother. Just to be on the safe side, I wished that they wouldn't realize they were frozen so that it would seem like nothing had happened by the time I unfroze them. I turned to Quyresee and said, "What the hell are you doing?"
"Just greeting my students," she said.
"They're not your students anymore!" I shouted. "You're not Tommy anymore!"
Quyresee's expression remained unchanged. "I guess that hasn't set in yet," she said. "I just did what felt natural."
"Well, now we have a bit of a minor problem," I said. "I'm going to have to make them forget they ever saw us or something." I felt like I'd lost my cool. This was the first time this had happened since everything started yesterday.
But Quyresee remained unflustered. "I think you're overreacting," she said.
"Maybe I am!" I shouted back.
"Maybe you should let me tell you about these two," she said. "You might find it interesting."
