When Geff came to, he found that he was in a dark room constructed from large stones that were well fit together. It seemed to him like it was part of a castle, not that he had ever been in a castle. Though he had seen castles in books. Wait, when had he ever seen something as rare as a book? Geff shook the strange thought out of his mind and looked across the room to see two tall, clean, well-dressed people, a man who looked to be in his thirties and a woman who looked to be in her twenties, looking down at him in disapproval. It was too dark to make out their features but it was clear that they were nobles.
The man, sneering, spoke first. "Look, sister, Sir Anthrock's latest pet has awoken."
The woman, evidently his sister, blandly replied, "It isn't the filthy peasant's fault that he's gotten caught up in things far greater than himself, you know."
"What, are you feeling sorry for him, Marina?"
"Of course not, Harland. But some perspective is required."
"Wuh... muh..." Geff attempted to speak, but he was gagged. Harland snapped, "Silence," and Geff obeyed without much thinking. Obeying nobles was just what peasants did.
Marina stepped forward and began lecturing him. "Your new knight is someone we've been meaning to take care of for a while now, boy. His ridiculous ideas about the rights of commoners, treating them equally and such nonsense, has gotten quite out of hand. You are a prime example of that. Taking a peasant as a squire instead of a proper noble..." She scoffed, and continued, "Unfortunately, that fool has the ear of the king, and His Majesty seems like he might be swayed. Obviously we cannot allow that to happen. So we are taking action."
Harland cleared his throat. "Is it really wise to be telling him all of this, sister?"
She rolled her eyes. "It's not as if it matters. I doubt he will even remember any of this when we are done, and there is no chance he will be able to act upon it."
Geff started struggling again. He didn't understand what they meant but he didn't like the sound of it. The young peasant had never thought about something as strange as peasants being equal to nobles (even though the idea seemed vaguely familiar, but he couldn't put his finger on it), but based on the way these nobles were treating him it seemed like a good idea right about now.
Harland spoke this time. "Relax, boy, we're not going to kill you. Normally we would, and we would lose no sleep over it. There are plenty more where you came from. But it turns out that we have use for you."
Marina grinned at him predatorially. "Of course, it will require you to be... changed."
