Kevin was okay, Laura decided, but now that she had a better-looking body and this powerful ring, she could easily do better. "I wish I was dating the hottest guy in school," she said.
"You don't think you are already?" Kevin asked, looking a bit sad.
"No, I --" Laura suddenly wasn't sure what she'd expected -- maybe that she'd be teleported to meet up with one of the studs from the football team? Or maybe that tall, dark, and handsome exchange student?
Before her eyes, though, Kevin was altering. He grew about 6 inches taller as his body bulked up with muscle, his clothes enlarging with him, a letter jacket suddenly appearing. His jawline squared as the rest of his face was slightly tweaked, his skin going a couple of shades toward tan, his hair thickening and moving out of its normal messiness into what looked like a professional style.
Laura stammered. "I-I -- I was just joking. Uh, since this ring isn't working for me."
"Ha, okay, then I'd better give it back to Cassandra before she misses it," said Kevin. His voice had dropped about half an octave, and to Laura, it almost seemed to be resonating within her. He held out his hand.
"Oh, um, do you need it right now? I could make some more wishes," Laura said, trying to put a bit of a lilt in her voice.
Kevin got her meaning. "What did you have in mind?"
Laura twisted the ring on her finger and said, "I wish..."
