What does the ice do...?

added 9 years ago O

After his dinner, Cal headed to bed. He looked out the window. It was still hailing hard, and if anything, more powerfully than it was in the early afternoon. He remembered the moment when he was looking into the sky, into the hail with his arms outstretched... and, when the ice fell into his hands. He hadn't thought much about the ice, actually. In fact, it was only then when he remembered it.

Cal got into his bedtime clothes and brushed his teeth. He entered his cozy, warm bed and read his book for about half an hour. 'Noughts and Crosses' was its name. Funny, one of the main characters had the same name as him. Callum. What an interesting coincidence.

Lights out. Eyes shut. Sleep. Dreams.

the ice
is

spinning
quickly.
in front of my... eyes
and it's

getting faster

by

the second.
it's gleaming
brightly

and it's pretty
and it's spinning quickly.

and it's pretty
and it's spinning quickly...

and the door opened...
and the ice
fell

into
my hand
it was an accident
right?

Cal woke up with a start and quickly looked at his watch. One fifteen in the morning. He looked out the window. Still hailing extremely hard. Pretty long storm, eh?

Cal snuggled back into his warm bed and just shut his eyes when a piece of hail crashed through the ceiling. Cal perked up quickly and looked up. Another large piece of ice crashed through the window and multiple shard of glass lay on the carpet floor of his bedroom. Another hailstone through the ceiling. Another, and another... the frequency of hailstones falling was rapidly increasing, the noise getting louder and louder and louder and louder...

Crashes and booms and smashes and other painful noises whirred around Cal, who was screaming at the top of his lungs, as now huge pieces of ice bombarded the house and entered his bedroom.

"HELP! HELP! I'm going to die!" Cal yelled. It would be impossible for his parents not to hear him.

More ice crashed through the ceiling, more and more. Pieces landed on Cal's bed, just missing him by centimeters.

And it stopped as suddenly as it had come.

The roof was gone. Completely crumbled. The hail had demolished all windows and pieces of the room, and Cal's once peaceful bedroom was in turmoil.

His laptop was in ruins, his desk was cracked and its pieces of wood lay on the icy carpet. A waterfall of tears ran down Cal's face. All his life he had slept in this bedroom, all his possessions and keepsakes gone, smashed and in the past. So much for remembering the past. Pfft, why did he even make that resolution in the first place? He was lying in his bed... completely... un... um... harmed? Wait a minute, how did that happen? Everything that surrounded him was covered in a layer of ice, but he didn't get affected? Isn't that... miraculous?

But he realized that the mysterious piece of ice was not affected either. It sat happily on his bedside table, glimmering in the soft and peaceful moonlight.

Nothing but the sweet sound of chirping insects could be heard that night. Cal lay, amazed by the event. He had to tell his parents!

Cal jumped out of his bed and manoeuvered his way over the shards of ice and glass, feet frozen, the wind affecting him as well. Upon opening his bedroom door, he could see that nothing beyond his bedroom had been affected by the ice storm. He shut his door and hopped down the stairs into his mother and father's room.

"Get up! You have to see this!"

Cal's mother woke quickly with fear. Mothers, always frightened for their children. The amazing things that love can do to attach you to your family. She quickly followed Cal to his door, where he entered into...

A completely normal bedroom? Where was the ice? The broken glass, the broken laptop, desk, everything? It was all back to normal!

"What is it that you have to show me, dear?"

"Oh um... nothing, sorry. I... must have been... tired. Yeah, just tired. Back to bed then!"

"Cal... I do love you, you know that? Don't frighten me like that."

The two close members of family hugged with tears of joy.

"I love you too... and I don't think there's anything that's going to change that, mother..."

That's what Callum thought.

But the ice had more power than he could imagine.
