You silently tense up as a mild, electrical feeling courses through your body. As suddenly as the rainbows appeared, they vanished, along with the strange sensation. You look at the amulet, and notice the design etched into its face for the first time. It was that of a woman, legs together and arms slightly held out; behind her back were the wings of a butterfly; and the remaining space was decorated with elegant swirls.
Suddenly, the amulet develops a slight rainbow glow, and you hear a voice. “Greetings,” you hear in perhaps the most beautiful voice you’ve ever heard, “I am Cliodhna, goddess of all fairies.” To say you were surprised was an understatement. You’ve met celebrities, politicians, diplomats, but this tops them all by a long shot. “This amulet, now bound to you, contains but a small fragment of my power. Since man was in its infancy, and fae were already ancient; great queens of fairies would use this amulet to bestow reward, impose punishment or simply treat themselves to amusement; and now, it is yours to use as you see fit.”
“There are limits to its power, though.” The fairy goddess continued. “You cannot change the past, you cannot impinge on the heart or mind, and you cannot directly alter the state of life and death.”
You thought to yourself. “So, I’ve got, more or less, a genie with unlimited wishes? Cool!”
“Be warned, though; the fair folk were once regarded with suspicion, fear and even hatred over the power you now wield. Use it wisely.” With that, the glow faded, as did the voice.
