You settle into your new life as a dog. Overall it isn't bad. At least you don't understand anymore what you're missing since your mind is almost completely dog now with only a few thoughts to remind you that you were once human. You're human masters confuse you sometimes because they seem to care so much about pieces of paper and keeping you off their upholstered furniture. You don't know what upholstered means. You just know that your female master says that word every time you try to nap on a certain comfortable cushion.
You don't understand the concept of names anymore either. You remember being told, "You're name is Sandy". But all you understand is that "Sandy" means pay attention or come here. So to you, you recognize your family by scent. There are four in your family. There's Old Spice, the biggest alpha in your pack. There's Ginger Cinnamon, the alpha female. There's Sweaty Gym Shoe, the younger male. And then there's Baby Powder, the youngest female who spends most of her time in a cage.
Old Spice is your favorite. You spend more time with Old Spice than with any of the others and whine whenever Old Spice leaves you behind. You're always there to jump and greet him when he comes home. During fleeting moments when your once human thoughts come back to you, you think to help him. Old Spice remarks that you must have been very well trained at one time because you seem to know the difference between his tennis shoes and his suit shoes. Also, even though you run ahead of him like any dog, you always know to stop at the crosswalk. You never poop inside and even outside, you always choose spots that cause the least inconvenience for others. None of your neighbors has ever complained about you barking, digging up their flowers, or chasing their precious kitty. Old Spice is amazed at how wonderful a dog you are.
Ginger Cinnamon is pleasant enough. She mostly ignores you but you can count on her for some of the tastiest treats. Just lay near her for a while and she's sure to toss you a juicy piece of meat. And late in the evening, if she's reading a book, you can curl up next to her and she'll scratch behind your ears.
Baby Powder mostly ignores you too but she's too young to do much. You understand enough to recognize she's still nursing and Ginger Cinnamon spends a lot of time with her.
Life would be pretty good except for Sweaty Gym Shoe. He's not mean but he's not nice. Often, he forgets to feed you and your painful tummy sends you looking for Old Spice or Ginger Cinnamon because they are more likely to put food out for you. When Sweaty Gym Shoe plays with you, his games aren't always fun. Your human mind understands that he doesn't mean to hurt you, but he often hurts you and isn't old enough to understand that he hurt you. You're afraid of him. You're also afraid of his friends as some of his friends are even worse than he is. They drag you around by the leash as if you were a burden instead of a friend.
