The Tigers won the game. Covered in sweat, grass stains, and mud, Jeff and Tyler joined in on the guttural group roar that was tradition after every victory. Then, the head coach made a speech about the importance of every player on the team, including Pete Ryan, the second-string quarterback who’d been injured in a crash that night.
Feeling bad about replacing Pete with Tyler, Jeff decided to visit him. Jeff and Tyler rode to the hospital on his bike. Tyler gripped his thick arms tightly around the runningback’s solid chest, and rested his head on Jeff’s broad shoulder.
Pete Ryan was out cold, but Jeff overhead the doctor telling Pete’s parents that he’d never play football again. This seemed so unfair. Jeff had to do something! He remembered his Chronovac. But how would he use it?
Tyler was already the ideal quarterback, so the starting quarterback slot’s already filled. But maybe Jeff could give Pete an entirely new life. But as what?
