Hippies used to live in communes. They were small communities, compounds, or even apartment buildings that a group of hippies would live in together. Almost like a big family, or group of friends. Despite the ideas of free love they did remain loyal to a boyfriend or girlfriend. Their children were born there without being registered with a birth certificate or social security number. They were sometimes just called "boy" or "girl" until they were old enough to choose a name for themselves, and sometimes referred to their own parents by their first names rather than the titles of "mom" or "dad". After the early 70s it was assumed that all the communes had been abandoned even if hippy ideals hadn't been.
Even to this day some older hippies remained "hold outs" and still slightly acted like hippies, perhaps minus the drugs. And now in 2014 a group of these older hold outs managed to pool enough money together to buy a rather large home from the family of some old businessman who had recently died. The children all had their own homes or successes so none of them really wanted to keep the home they inherited so they put it up for sale. The hippie hold outs had enough money so now it was theirs.
It didn't take long for the hippies to start spreading their anti government and pro freedom ideas to the nearby town. And while most people weren't interested in their propaganda it seemed to start getting to the teens and college students in the area.
But it was more than just simply convincing them to join along. Some teens who seemed completely fine with going along with society seemed to have an about face after a meeting or two with new commune. Responsible teens who were all about good grades and never touched any drugs in their entire lives would be found half naked and stoned out near the compound a few days later, then flunked out of school a few weeks after that, it was strange. Some even looked the part a little too quickly too, suddenly with longer hair and more tanned skin, or already rocking dreads even though they had short hair a week earlier.
And as one or two people got sucked into it, it wasn't long until their entire circle of friends became sucked in as well. Some people even dragging their boyfriend or girlfriend in as well.
Most people just chalked it up to the drug use that changed everyone so quickly and with all the troubles in the Middle East it was assumed the fear of a war simply re-triggered a new hippy movement, there was certainly enough to protest.
