Jenny let Clemens approach their entertainment center to get things ready for whatever movie they were going to watch, and moved to collect the phone from the end table in their living room. After picking up the phone, she walked back to the kitchen and dialed her brother's home number as she went. It wasn't terribly late and her brother and his wife lived close enough that she could know what he was up to with Emily. She quietly paced as she listened to the phone ring. After three rings, she heard the line on the other end be picked up and a male voice answered.
"Hello?" came her brother's voice.
"Hey Pete," Jenny said in a friendly voice, "How are you?"
"Jenny! How are you baby sis?" her brother, Peter, answered.
"Doing good," Jenny answered, "Clemens and I met with the wedding planners today... getting all our ducks in a row."
"How'd it go?" Peter asked curiously.
"Quite well... there's a lot we need to wrestle through, but we have a schedule and we'll be able to meet it," Jenny told him.
"Well that's great, baby sis," Peter answered her, "and Clemens seems to be quite a nice guy. I'm sure you'll both be happy... lots of hugs and all."
"Ha, Ha, big brother," Jenny shook her head at the joke. Peter got along well with Clemens and even did some research on snakes after meeting him for the first time. This of course lead to his favorite joke to her, and since pythons were constrictors, Clemens was great at giving hugs.
"So, what is your schedule?" Peter asked.
"Well, the wedding will be in a couple of weeks on Saturday, it should be on your calender," Jenny answered and paused to hear her brother say "uh-huh" in the background and then continued, "and our rehearsal will be on the Friday before. And some of that is why I've called."
"Oh... Clemens need a best man?" Peter asked, "I told you I'd be more than happy to do it if he needed one..."
"No, Clemens is good, his cousin agreed to be Best Man," Jenny answered, "but you will still be at the wedding, right?"
"Front row seat," Peter promised, "I wouldn't miss it for the world. So what do you need?"
Jenny was quiet for a moment and scratched the back of her head for a moment. After a short moment, she did answer, "A Maid of Honor, actually... most of my friends either have to work that day or moved away after college... and while we email and have talked on the phone a few times, they can't come back to be there..."
"You know I can't be your Maid of Honor, baby sis," Peter teased, making Jenny sigh and shake her head.
"Emily can, Pete, Emily can," Jenny sighed.
"Well... that makes much more sense, hold on, I'll put her on and you two can put together your plans," Peter answered.
Jenny quietly walked through the kitchen/dining room area and looked into the living room. She could see Clemens putting a DVD into their DVD player. She wanted to look closer to see what movie he'd chosen when she heard her sister-in-law's, Emily's, voice.
"Hey, Jen," Emily spoke on the other line, "Pete said you were looking for a Maid of Honor."
Jenny quickly returned her attention the phone and walked back into the kitchen and away from the entryway into the living room.
"Yes, yes, I do," Jenny answered, "and I'd thought you might like to have the role."
"I'd love the role, dear, I assume you'd need me to be there for rehearsals?" Emily asked.
Jenny nodded, "Yes, and they're on the Friday before the wedding. The date should be on your calender. Can you come then?"
There was a brief silence for a moment, which made Jenny feel a bit nervous. She wondered if something was wrong.
"Em?" Jenny asked, "Is something wrong?"
"Oh, no, nothing's wrong," Emily answered, "but there might be a scheduling conflict for me regarding the rehearsal... what time is it at?"
"Well the rehearsal will be at around three PM to then run through basic events so that way we have everything in order," Jenny answered, "Clemens and I can even show you where to go..."
"Three PM," Emily mused and was then quiet for a moment, "I may need to check with you on the locations before than... but I think we can just squeak through regarding the rehearsal."
"What's going on, Em?" Jenny asked.
"I have a doctor's appointment that morning, nothing big, nothing to worry about," Emily assured her, though there was something in her tone that told Jenny that she was hiding something. It made Jenny curious and nervous at the same time, but she didn't want to intrude on business that wasn't her's.
"And you're sure you can make the rehearsal?" Jenny asked.
"Provided you don't move up the time," Emily answered, "and don't worry, I'm fine."
