It was a typical Monday afternoon in the town of Jefferson one of the few towns that had remained unaffected by the virus, as the virus evolved into more and more subservient forms more people fell to its power, many domestic governments fell with their communities, and what was left of the federal government performed isolation and kept themselves clear of the infection area. The people of Jefferson get up and get to work making sure the walls around the town are secure, on-duty sheriffs are making patrols outside the walls with what limited fuel supplies are available, and the rest are getting ready for another day of just being alive.
The sun was full risen before anyone noticed anything strange, the deputies who are normal out on duty beyond the wall scavenging had not returned and they had not radioed in for the mid-morning confirmation. Mr. Derek the mayor had kept the information on the need to know basis, while subtle having a small squad of officers go out and report on what they saw. The wall was secure as ever, but not wanting to be caught on-aware Mr. Derek had the bi-monthly fix come a couple weeks early and a group of engineers moved towards the walls their job in mind.
Off in the far corner of the town in the local orphanage a boy, Jonathon, was just awakening for his daily chores. Jonathon was a typical twelve year old; always looking for the next big adventure, and ever since the outbreak when he was just a toddler he has been an orphan (as his parents were in New York, Ground Zero) and he wants to prove himself. The boy was always asking to be let out on the patrols for he was sure that he could help the deputies in their duties, but he had to wait until he was sixteen as that was when the orphaned children were apprenticed off to those who could work and be productive members of society.
All was silent in the morning, not even the normal hustle and bustle of the people working could drown out this silence. The guard on duty for long range recon, gazed out with his binoculars and saw something that made his heart freeze. For off in the distance a massive heard of thousands of donkeys were charging in their direction and then all hell broke lose.
