My name is John. There's not much I can say about myself other than I'm a nineteen year old college student who lives with his mother and younger sister. I never knew my father. My mom told me he died when I was little, but for some reason I can' help but think that that was a lie. Maybe it was because I've never seen any pictures of him in any of our old family photo albums. It could also be because my mom gave birth to me when she was seventeen and my sister when she was eighteen. If you ask me, I think he ran away. Probably couldn't handle the responsibility of being a teenage father, not that I can blame him.
It was around nine thirty in the morning when I woke up in my warm comfortable bed. My dog, Hank, was laying at the other end of the bed like he usually does and as I got up out of my bed so did he. Hank has been around for as long as I can remember. He must be at least sixteen years old, but the odd thing is he has looked and acted like was eight for as long as we've known him. You could say he's the spitting image of health. Hank and I made our way down the hallway and I must have been half a sleep because, before I made it to the stairs, I bumped right into my younger sister, Rachel. She must have just gotten out of the shower because she had a white towel wrapped around her body.
"Sorry" I said to her as we made our way around her. She said nothing to me as Hank and I calmly went down the stairs. At the dining table my mom sat drinking her coffee and reading her book. I made myself a bowl of cereal and sat down at the other end of the table to eat it. Hank lay down beside my chair without even begging for any food. It was quiet until my mom finally broke the silence.
"Don't forget to wish your sister a happy birthday today." Crap! I totally forgot that today was Rachel's eighteenth birthday.
"Is she having a party today or something?" I asked my mom who just smiled at me.
"No, she said she just wanted to spend the day with you."
"Seriously?" I answered. That was kind of hard to believe since Rachel and I aren't really that close. We didn't hate each other or anything, but we hardly ever talk to one another.
"Yep. I have to go in to work today but I should be home early around one."
I nodded. Once I had finished my cereal I put the bowl in the dishwasher and and headed upstairs, leaving Hank downstairs with my mom. I walked up to my sister's bedroom door and knocked.
"Come in!" Rachel said and I entered into her room. Once I was in I noticed she was sitting on her bed in nothing but her underwear.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I'll come back another time." I said averting my eyes from my half naked sister.
"No, stay." she said. "I wanted to talk to you. After all today is a special day."
"Oh yeah, happy birthday. Eighteen's a pretty big deal. Mom said you wanted to spend today with me, any particular reason why?"
"Of course. I'm guessing Mom didn't tell you why else today is special for me."
"Umm, I guess not."
"Well not only is today my eighteenth birthday, but today is the day I get my powers."
"Powers?" I said confusedly. She must be joking around.
"Yep, today I've finally became a witch and Mom has given me permission to use my new powers anyway I want."
"You're joking right?"
"I'm not joking." Rachel said.
"Ok then can give me proof that you have magic powers."
