I don't know how long I slept that night, but it was a good while, I can tell you that. It felt oddly pleasant, sleeping next to Ruby, even if we weren't too close. I knew she was quick to turn to violence, but I figured I could develop something between us in time. And, to be honest, I thought it was hot when she got angry.
"Hey."
Ruby kicked me lightly in the side.
"Get up. They want us to do our work for the day."
" Thanks, mom, I'd like some more sugar on my cereal..." I dozed off again, falling back to sleep.
I was awakened with a thud as I hit the floor. "If you don't get your ass off the ground now, I'm coming down their and kicking your ass."
"Fine, I'll get up." I rose uneasily, trying to balance on my larger feet. Having a tail helped greatly.
"So," I said, wearily. "What are they having us do?"
"They want us to make breakfast. Say were on "Kitchen duty."
I groaned. My family, including myself, had all the cooking skill of a dead cow. That is, none at all.
"Y'know, if they're making us live and work here, they could at least provide some help."
We arrived at the kitchens around 9. Two men in leather outfits handed us frying pans and told us to make bacon.
One of the other workers, a fox, raised his hand. "What if we get fur in the food?"
The men guffawed and joked "More flavor, right?"
..........
I stared out a window as the bacon on my pan sizzled. I don't know what was in there, but it sure as hell wasn't actual food.
"So, Ruby, you really don't remember transforming?" I sighed. "No, I..." Then I paused. I hadn't told anyone about how I became what I am, or who I am. Maybe, if I told Rick, I could blow off some steam and relax a bit.
"Alright. You wanna know? I'll tell you tonight."
"Great! I've always wondered about you." He went back to his pan, and I found that my bacon had been burned to a crisp.
"Fuckin' pigs," I said, grabbing another strip of pink stuff.
