Ruby and I sat at the lunch table, eating what would be our last meal as anthros. It was 11:26. Conversions would begin in 34 minutes.
"I wonder what its gonna be like. Being a kangaroo again. I won't have to worry about bills, or cops." She said. "Maybe I'll find some new friends."
I was just eating my lunch. I could hardly speak anymore, knowing what awaited me.
"Hey."
Jack sat down next to us with Mary. "We're not gonna be talking to each other anymore. I just want you two to know that you'll do great. I know how you feel about each other, and I just wanted to say good luck."
"That's funny. You've never been sentimental like tha..."
He leaned in and whispered. "Look, I think somethin's goin on. They've taken 3 guards to the infirmary, and Collins is making a speech on the T.V."
I looked at a nearby guard. He was sweating profusely, and looked to be in alot of pain.
"See what I mean, Rick? Collins speech is starting now. Wanna hear what it's about?"
He pulled out a remote and smiled. "Cause I shure do."
..........
The crowd was about 10,000. Collins stepped up to the podium.
"Fellow human beings. An era has come to an end. Our furry friends will soon begin their transition back to their natural form."
The crowd cheered. Collins smiled. Was it a bit warm?
"I know we havr all enjoyed their company. And some of us will be returning with them. But it is time to move forward. To..."
He wiped his forehead. The heat was overwhelming. As his sleeve passed his face, he saw his hand.
It was morphing, changing, like a ball of dough. Collins screamed as his bones began shifting. And soon, the crowd began screaming as they felt the same pain.
Then the city.
Then the state
Then the country, the continent, and ultimately, the whole world.
For 2 minutes, the planet cried in agony as they grew, fur, claws, long ears, and tails. The human race was going extinct.
..........
I stared blankly at the television screen. "Rick, do you know..."
I was cut off by a shriek from a guard. He fell to the ground, writhing in pain. As he squirmed, his body shifted into that of an anthropomorphic jaguar.
Another guard fell, this time a bear. Another, raccoon. Another, rat. The humans fell, one by one, as they became the things they had scorned.
The lunch hall was a madhouse. Chairs were flung. People were flung. Windows smashed, bones cracked, blood ran. A riot had started. And a chance had opened.
I grabbed Rick by the wrist. "Come on, let's get the fuck out of here!" I ran through the crowd, punching and kicking anyone in my way. I managed to pick up a guard's ring of keys. We ran down the corridors, following the signs marking tha path leading to the exit.
Finally, we reached the outside. The area was fenced in, and we didn't have time to mess around with the keys.
"Ruby, we can't get over this fence!" Rick said, in a panicked tone. "It's too high!"
"I'm sorry, did you just say too high?" He nodded. "You do realize what we are, right?"
He pausec. "Oh, yeah." We stood next to eachothe, at the front. "Alright, on the count of three, jump. One, two, three!"
I leaped off of the earth and flew into the sky. I had gone up 20 feet, using just my legs. Rick was a few feet below me, but we still got over the fence. I landed with a thud as I stood up, disoriented from the experience.
"Rick, you okay?" I found Rick on the ground. He had landed face down on the pavement. "No, auntie, I don't wanna liver cake..."
"Aw, get up, ya dumbass!" I pulled him up by his neck. He wobbled a bit, but eventually regained balance.
We ran as fast as possible. It wasn't long before the containment area was a speck on the horizon.
We were free.
