A woman relaxed behind the register with a book in her hand. He didn’t see a door behind the counter and the shelves were all to low for her to have been standing out of view. He puzzled over it but guessed that she must have been outside when he came in. He set the box in front of her.
“Is that all?” The woman said as she looked at the nondescript packaging.
“Maybe. Can you tell me anything about it?” He asked.
She cocked an eyebrow. “I don’t know much, but customers seem to really enjoy it.”
“The whole game runs on a round screen and randomly picks transformations.”
“You just have to tap when it’s your turn.”
Jeff raised an eyebrow. “It’s got a touch screen?”
The woman nodded.
“How much is it? I didn’t see a price anywhere.”
“Um...” She glanced around, as if expecting someone else to give her the answer, then turned back. “$30?”
Jeff thought for a moment. Not many inexpensive games had screens, much less touch screens. He might have guessed it was considerably more expensive from the minimal box design. Was this girl new? Maybe it really was an antique shop and prices were haggled or guessed. Either way, $30 seemed like a good deal.
“I think I’d like to buy this...” He said.
“Cool, but I’ll need to see your ID.” The woman replied.
He reached for his wallet and asked, “Why do you need my ID?”
Jeff wasn’t worried. He was in his mid twenties. Had he not shaved a few nights earlier, the woman may not have even questioned his age.
“Well, if this were a movie, they’d probably give it a mature rating...”
“So this is a sex game?” Jeff asked.
She frowned, “Not necessarily...”
He handed over his ID along with a couple twenties.
She verified his age and rang up the game. The ancient looking cash register popped open and she handed back a $10 with a hand written receipt. He tucked the receipt and cash back into his wallet, thanked her, then left to find Beth...
