The silence is defaming. You can't take waiting anymore. You have to do something before you die of boredom.
You look to the left of you and see the elevators. There's four of them, all whirring away with some occupant going to somewhere in this building inside. Why can't you be one of those people?
You look around. Megan has disappeared and is nowhere to be found. She's not going to catch you, no siree.
You set your page of references on the table and steal a sticky note off the desk. You write "Bathroom-back in 5" on it and stick it on the paper. Who's going to know when you put it there?
You walk quietly, almost tiptoeing, over to the elevators, your sneakers squeaking ever so softly on the tile. Suit with sneakers. Go figure.
Only the far right one currently resides on the first floor. All the other ones are on some other of the 59 floors. You walk over and go to push the button when something alarms you.
Some kind of red liquid is stuck to the up button. In the stain is a mashed fingerprint, like someone pushed the button over and over, eager to get away from this floor. You look down the hallway and around you. The unnatural stillness alarms you. You decide to hurry.
You mash the button in the same way the other person must have, and the gray metal doors quickly spring open. You rush inside just in time before the doors close with an imposing clang.
The elevator is one you would expect to see in any office building. Cheap green carpet covers the floor, with equally cheap wood paneling on the walls.
The elevator suddenly starts going up. In you haste to get in, you must have accidentally bumped a button. You take off like a rocket up the elevator shaft.
At least the whirring of the elevators defeats the silence in here.
You look up at the floor number. The elevator is slowing. You pray that you haven't ended up on some floor where freak mutated weirdoes live.
The elevator comes to a stop and the doors methodically open. You stare at a tile floor, a simple white wall, and a sign bearing this floor's subject on it...
