I had always liked history, and an idea had occurred to me, so although it seemed like a stretch I decided to ask Runt, "Is it possible for you to send me back in time?"
"Well, duh!" Runt was cheerfully offended. "It isn't easy to find places to be a wild animal far away from humans nowadays, let me tell you. Four hundred years ago, though? Much easier for everyone. So yeah, I may not be one of those uppity chronophages with their fancy non-linear experience of time, but yeah, time travel is well within my powers."
Before I could speak up, Runt continued, "But sending you back in time as yourself is a risky proposition. If you change the past it could have unpredictable and/or dire consequences for the present, like me having nowhere to stay on account of this apartment not existing because it was never built or destroyed in a nuclear war or whatever."
Startled, I shook my head vigorously. "I don't want to change the past, I just want to experience it. And not as myself, as someone from the past. Thinking and feeling like an average person from that time, sort of like what I had with the sheep, but, uh, human. Human male."
"Always limiting me, aren't you? Fine, fine. Any time in particular you'd like to visit?" Runt asked.
"Something over a hundred years ago, but other than that," I grinned a little, "surprise me."
Runt nodded. "Alright, I can work with that. Should be pretty easy, actually, just a matter of finding a life and putting you into it. Oh, and a little advice before you go. My kind and our powers, what you people would call magic, used to be stronger in certain times and places than they are here and now. A lot stronger, in some cases, though we like to keep it under wraps. Depending on when and where I send you, troublemakers might pick up my meddling with you and make trouble for you, and I won't really be able to help you. Or, well, I will, but I probably won't want to."
"Wait, what?!" I sputtered in alarm, but Runt just ignored me and snapped his fingers instead. "Aha, I have just the thing for you." The world dissolved and reformed around me, and Runt's last words to me echoes in my head. "Good luck, and enjoy your all-expenses-paid trip back to..."
