The old woman at the shop had said it would change their lives. Suddenly the thought didn't sound so appealing anymore.
Brian and Elliot were two classic college nerds. They live together in a small apartment away from most of their peers, which suited them fine most of the time. Both were small, shy and studious and didn't have much at all in common with the beer-swilling, muscle head jocks that seemed to infiltrate their school left right and centre.
Therein lay the problem. They were also budding journalists and had come across a great idea by which they would write an expose of what life in a college like theirs was really like. It would shine a light on all the spoilt, vain jocks that took their education for granted, preferring to spend their time partying, playing sports and pursuing beautiful women.
But Brian and Elliot's only chance of getting close enough to a group of guys like that was by taking a pill like this which professed to transform them into whatever their hearts desired. So, either Brian or Elliot would take it, spend a few days hanging out at the gym, beach or college dorms and then once they had enough material, would take the antidote to transform back and write the article.
They could only afford one pill so had drawn straws and Elliot was the unlucky one. With a gulp of water, he swallowed the pill whole and stared back meekly at his friend. The old woman had said that most of the changes would happen during sleep so both boys retired to bed, nervous about what the new day would bring.
