"So Coach, I don't see that Chad fellow you wanted me to scout," said Milford DeVries.
"Sorry, Milly, but I am afraid he's AWOL. I've got my second stringer in, Juan Garcia. He's pretty good."
"I didn't drive 200 miles for pretty good."
"Well, you're here enjoy the game."
Milford harumphed and began reading his smart phone. Another wasted trip.
Then the game began.
Juan made a dozen spectacular plays in a row. He was playing as well as Chad ever had. Really, he just let Chad take control. The jock was so vain, he couldn't stand the idea of his team losing even on game.
At half time, Millie came down and flagged the coach over.
"I thought you said he was pretty good. He's as better than that Chad whatsit you told me to come see."
The coach thought quickly, "Well, they've trained together. Of course, Juan's really come into his own in the last couple weeks. I didn't think you'd come down just to see him."
"He's a senior? And he's Hispanic?"
"Yeah?"
"I'll get him a spot at State on their Varsity team and we'll have a spot for him the NFL when he's ready. Just have him sign this contract."
As Juan headed for the lockers, Coach stopped him. "Good job, Juan. You played great, and you know I think you've had a growth spurt. You seem a tad taller, or maybe it's the blond highlights in your hair?"
"Thanks, Coach." Blond highlights? Chad must be leaking through with more than his abilities. Interesting side effect. Juan headed to the scale to see if height had changed too.
In the locker room, Juan is having a talk with Chad his compression shorts for the night.
"See my abuelito -grandpa is in the stands tonight, and I needed him to see that I am a great player. And this seemed like the easiest way to get your skills and get field time. I'll change you back after we-"
"Hey, Juan, get over here. There's someone I want you to meet," Coach said, "This is Millie - Milford Devries. He's a scout."
"Mr. Garcia, pleased to make your acquaintance. As long as you've got moves like you showed me on the field tonight, I've got a spot for you in the NFL, after you go to State and play on their Varsity team that is," Milly said shaking Juan's hand.
"Oh, I'm not going to college. Too expensive. Didn't even apply," he said.
"Well, I've got connections. You start at State in the Fall. Guaranteed. Just play like you have been and you will get a full-ride scholarship all four years and then we'll have the NFL draft. I'll be your manager. Just sign here," he said producing a sheaf of papers.
"What can I say?" Juan answered, "This is a dream come true. Yes!" Under his breath he whispered, sorry, Chad, you're my new lucky undies.
