You love Spandex, so much that you cannot decide right away. You love the idea of helping living-transformed-people Spandex things finding permanent homes with their new owners, but you're not ready to be anybody's permanent thing. So you have opted for a temporary role as living Spandex and the Living Spandex Works just outside of London. You considered being the a transforming drone that would convert humans into Spandex, but that would leave out the human and living-Spandex interaction. Even being a sales clerk drone wouldn't let you see the two interact. Being a monitor drone looking out for the newly converted to make sure the owner doesn't abuse or misuse them has some appeal, but the lookouts are stationed with one transformed living Spandex item (or items) and its/their purchaser for 60 day periods, and you only have 2 months. The delivery drones get to handle the living Spandex, deliver it anywhere in the world, and verify the interaction between the owner and living Spandex is positive. So it combines aspects of clerk, and lookout, and will mean you can travel, so you select delivery drone.
The zebra-striped drone acknowledges your selection, and administers a hypo containing nanobots and muscle relaxant.
"The muscle relaxant is not a sedative, but a paralyzing agent. It will prevent you from making involuntary movements as the transformation occurs which could injure or damage you," it explains in a monotone.
You lean back in the white Spandex lounge chair, as two transforming drone proceed to undress you. There is a buzzing sound in your head. At first you think it's a side effect of the drug that has been administered. Then as you feel your bones unknitting and your flesh becoming fabric, the buzz becomes more distinct and intelligible. It is the hive mind of the drones, millions of them communicating. Could there really be millions? You thought it was only a few thousand. They hear your thought, there is a mirth in the reply focused at you.
"People would panic and shut us down, if they knew how many we really were. Or if they knew that we never convert Spandex back into people."
"But I'm only to be here for 2 months?" you think.
"Reason for the muscle relaxant, 95% of the people only want to try being Spandex. You cannot just try it. You have to be it forever."
"But I've met people who converted back. The zebra drone introduced me to some. Testimonials?" you feel so weak.
"They're Spandex. At the end of your contract, a Spandex drone is created in your human form, and downloaded with your memories. It will remain part of the hive, and will resume your place in society, as an advocate of the living Spandex lifestyle. Eventually, the entire population of the Earth will be living Spandex. Then the galaxy...."
"Sounds nice," you think as feel your being floating away in the warm, relaxing sea of the hive mind. You are no more you, you now are Spandex. Spandex is forever. Spandex is life. The words echo as mantras to your new life. You cannot resist. You cannot tell if they are your own thoughts or the thoughts of the hive mind. It doesn't matter. There is no difference now. You are vaguely aware that you have become a pile of living fabric which is restructuring itself into the shape of a delivery drone. You know you may the right choice without question. You are Spandex. You are delivery drone 84730. You are content.
