After talking it over, the two decided that the circus wasn't for them. They weren't even sure if it was there. But they did decide to travel together for a while. Both
had been on the road long enough to know it could be dangerous at times.
They knew couldn't hang around the rest stop forever. A highway patrol car had already pulled through once. So they started looking for a ride. After a couple of
failed tries, they hitched a ride with a truck driver. It certainly wasn't the most elegant ride. The truck was hauling a trailer full of donkeys! But at least the driver
didn't ask many questions.
About an hour later Grrl and Cat found themselves at a truck stop. "What do you think?" Cat asked after the driver had gone in to eat. "I've got enough to buy us
both dinner."
Grrl looked dubious. "I don't know. I don't really like the looks of this place. There's a Waffle House across the bridge. Maybe we should walk..."
"What's wrong?" Cat asked as Grrl paused.
Grrl walked around to the back of the trailer. "I don't know. Thought I heard something. I guess it was just these things shuffling around."
"Yeah. I didn't want to ask the driver, but what the heck is someone going to do with a truckload full of donkeys? I could understand cows or horses, but what
good are these things?"
"Help... me."
Both girls froze, then looked at each other. "Tell me you're a ventriloquist," Cat said.
Grrl shook her head. "It can't be. This is twilight zone crap."
"Help me... please!" There was no doubting it this time. One of the donkeys was talking. "I'm hu... hu... human! Please... please help me!"
